A slow start did not stop Louisville City FC Saturday night, as the boys in purple came from behind to defeat Loudoun United FC 2-1 before 9,528 fans at Lynn Family Stadium.
Loudoun started fast, scoring in the fifth minute, but LouCity’s Ray Serrano and Chris Donovan responded with goals before the halftime break to gain the lead for good.
The win moves LouCity (10-9-6, 36 points) up to sixth in the Eastern Conference standings, though seventh-place Indy could equal LouCity on points with a win Sunday.
Elsewhere, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds lost Saturday, meaning LouCity is just two points out of the Eastern Conference’s top four, which would ensure a home playoff game. Hartford Athletic, in fifth place, could make that gap four points with a win at Las Vegas Lights late Saturday night (10:30 p.m. ET).
Regardless, the win pushes LouCity in the right direction, with five league games remaining in the regular season.
“Relief, I think, more than anything,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said of his reaction. “(I) didn’t think it was our sharpest performance, but ultimately we’re in a position where we need three points. And I thought after a really slow start, we persevered.”
Eddy Davis III scored for Loudoun in the fifth minute, finishing a terrific cross from Abdellatif Aboukoura.
A goal behind, LouCity took until the 22nd-minute hydration break to “get into the game,” Bird said.
“It was flat, I thought, from the beginning,” Bird said of his team’s start. “The positive is that we responded. But it shouldn’t take a mid-half team talk and getting together (in a hydration break) to do that. We need to be able to solve that on the pitch. We need to start better.”
LouCity broke through in the 38th minute, with Babacar Niang helping set up Serrano’s equalizer. Niang, the 24-year-old Senegalese midfielder, made his first appearance since June 20 after battling injury.
Niang made a barreling run before crashing into a Loudoun player, though he got the pass off just before the collision. That pass found Quenzi Huerman, who then played it to Ray Serrano, who blasted it past Loudoun’s Jordan Farr to score.
“He’s a guy that works extremely hard, and I’m so happy for him. So happy that he played the minutes that he played tonight and the performance he put together tonight,” Serrano said of Niang, who played 57 minutes in his return, finishing with a team-high six duels won.
Serrano’s finish — pulling away from the defender while hitting the ball first-time across his body — was the result of some hard work of his own: “I work on that finish a lot in training,” he said. It was his seventh goal of the season and fifth in league play.
Huerman tallied his fifth assist on the play, all coming in regular-season games this season.
“The staff has harped on it all year long about me making runs in behind and trying to find myself in those positions,” Huerman said.
Chris Donovan gave LouCity the lead in the 45th minute, reacting first to the rebound from a Huerman shot. Donovan’s goal sent LouCity into the locker room in front, despite the slow start, and proved to be the winner.
It was Donovan’s 10th goal in his first season with Louisville City, joining Jansen Wilson as LouCity’s only double-digit goalscorers this season. It was his seventh league goal of the campaign.
The second half saw an open game with chances for both teams — 14 combined shots, including 10 for Loudoun — but no goals. LouCity goalkeeper Ryan Schewe finished with six saves, including three in the second half, to preserve the win.
It was LouCity’s first home win since July 29.
From here, LouCity will face Hartford on the road in back-to-back weeks — in a regular season game at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by the Prinx Tires USL Cup Final on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Bird said his team’s focus is squarely on next week’s league game, and not the looming Cup Final.
“For us, it’s the next mission. The next mission is Hartford. And we know that we’ve got to take it one week at a time. That’s the next one up. We’re going there to get three points … And then we’ll look at the Final after that,” Bird said.
