GAME DAY: LouCity at Kentucky in final preseason match today

Louisville City will play at the University of Kentucky Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky. Saturday marks Louisville City’s final match of the preseason before launching into the 2020 USL Championship schedule next week in North Carolina.

PRESEASON SUCCESS

LouCity opened its preseason with tests vs. D.C. United and Nashville SC while training at IMG Academy in Florida. Then Louisville City traveled to Utah on Feb. 14 in preparation for the 2020 Wasatch Cup.

After beating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and securing a point from a match vs. Union Omaha, Louisville City won the 2020 Wasatch Cup on Saturday with a win over the Real Monarchs.

LouCity returned to Louisville to train during the final two weeks before the USL Championship schedule begins on March 7. The club beat Forward Madison from USL League One 4-0 in a training match on Tuesday and will close out the preseason schedule with today’s match at Kentucky.

USL CHAMPIONSHIP:

Louisville City will open its USL Championship play on the road, facing North Carolina FC on March 7. The club will play its first four matches on the road before returning home to open Lynn Family Stadium on April 11.

NEXT HOME MATCH

Louisville City’s first U.S. Open Cup game will be April 7 at 7 p.m. at Lynn Family Stadium. Louisville City will host the winner of Nashville United and Cleveland SC (NPSL). LouCity will open its USL Championship slate on Saturday, April 11 vs. Birmingham Legion.

As Louisville City’s first season in Lynn Family Stadium draws near, all fans can log on to LouCity’s Ticket partner SeatGeek this morning after 10 a.m. to purchase tickets for the first match in the new stadium.

Excitement is high for Louisville City’s 2020 season. The largest soccer-specific stadium in the region with seating locations for 11,700 fans and a capacity of 15,000, Lynn Family Stadium will provide a stellar view of the playing pitch with unprecedented access for local soccer supporters.

Louisville City surpassed 5,000 Season Ticket Members on the first day of the public sale in August. In November, the club announced a new all-time record for Season Ticket Members, surpassing the previous high set in 2019.

With less than 50 days to go before the April 11 home opener, Louisville City supporters have sold out more than 20 full sections and several more are nearly full as well.

Season Ticket Members have access to purchase single-game tickets to any match currently. On Friday, single-match tickets for all other games will become available to all fans through Louisville City’s ticketing partner SeatGeek.

Rasmussen looks to build on 2019 success

Magnus Rasmussen, Louisville City FC’s leading goalscorer in 2019, looks to continue his success not just individually, but as a team heading into 2020.

“My personal goal is to try to continue the play that I put up last year,” the Danish goalscorer said. “Obviously I want to try and see if I can have a season like that again, but as a team we are striving for that third championship.”

Netting 17 goals for the club during the regular season and four goals in the postseason, Rasmussen said he owes last season’s success to not just his individual play but contributions from the team as well.

“I think it’s a combination that I’ve got some trust from the coaches and I have a good free role in that number 10 spot, ” Rasmussen said. “I was good at getting into the box and finding myself in good areas and my teammates were really good to find me in those areas. I think it was just a combination of good form.”

While Rasmussen was recognized for his ability to finish last season, Louisville City head coach and Sporting Director John Hackworth said looking back, Rasmussen’s ability to produce offense might have gone under the radar.

“I know last year, for everybody who doesn’t know how good of a footballer he is, they got to see it for a long time,” Hackworth said. “He probably didn’t get enough credit for doing the job of our playmaker because he too does so much work on the field. Big engine, but his first touch is one of the best first touches in the league .”

Rasmussen said that trust from the coaches and his teammates allowed him to be the level of player that he desired.

“As a footballer you have to have a certain confidence because otherwise, you’re just going to get run over by your opponents and your teammates, ” he said. “If you want to reach a certain level then you need to have a certain confidence and I believe in myself and I hope that everyone on the team believes in themselves because we have a good squad.”

Rasmussen hopes to help the club continue the success it has had throughout its history.

“I think that many players coming back from last year when we reached the finals and we just got another three signings which is really strengthening our team,” he said. “And [Cameron Lancaster] coming back, he was the Golden Boot winner two years ago, so obviously we are striving for a championship and nothing less.”

Hackworth said Rasmussen’s composure under pressure and means of staying comfortable with what is being thrown at him is key to the club’s success, not only during this pre-season but also heading into the regular season in March.

“His ability to score goals last year was so important to us, nothing epitomizes that more than his goal against Indy,” Hackworth said. “So far in pre-season, he’s had the same approach that he did last year, look forward to having that again.”

Despite Rasmussen’s and the club’s recent success in all competition, Rasmussen said the club’s training sessions have built the tradition and culture that is Louisville City.

“Sometimes we say our training sessions are harder than the games because we are so competitive in training, so I think that level of training and that level of competitiveness is some of the success behind Louisville City FC,” he said.

When the club kicks off for their 2020 home opener on Saturday, April 11 vs. Birmingham Legion at Lynn Family Stadium, not only will Rasmussen’s individual success be recognized by the Louisville City faithful but the club’s accomplishments as they take the next step into the future.

“It’s going to be fantastic. It is going to be an awesome feeling walking in there and to see that in 2015 I was here with [Niall McCabe] and some of the guys who have been here since 2016 as well,” he said. “We have been through a lot and now to see what the club has evolved into is just amazing, it’s really cool to be a part of it.”

LouCity beats Forward Madison 4-0

TUESDAY, FEB. 25 – Louisville City Football Club got a brace from striker Cameron Lancaster and first-half goals from Paolo DelPiccolo and Abdou Thiam to cruise to a 4-0 win in the club’s penultimate preseason tilt Tuesday.

“Having Cam back is huge for us because we have one of the best goal-scorers this league has ever known,” Louisville City coach John Hackworth said. “And for our club, specifically, he has been tremendous. When you have a goal scorer like him, who just finds a way to put the ball in the back of the net, all the other phases of the game that we try to play at such a high level become – it’s not so much that they are easier, but if you can execute in that one phase and then take care of all the rest, it makes for a very solid team. At the end of the day, you are trying to score more goals than your opponent and, with him, we are certainly looking to do that.”

In the 9′, Lancaster found himself with the ball in the box after a nifty corner kick play by Oscar Jimenez. Lancaster spun and shot, but his shot was blocked. When the rebound found his foot again, Lancaster buried it into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Just two minutes later Lancaster collected his second goal when he returned the rebound after Abdou Thiam’s shot was blocked by Forward Madison’s keeper. The ball deflected off the keeper straight to Lancaster’s head for an easy second goal.

Louisville City’s pressure was giving Forward Madison fits and just nine minutes later, Paolo DelPiccolo pushed LouCity’s lead to 3-0 when he drove a shot into the goal from the edge of the box.

Continuing to pressure Forward Madison all over the pitch, Louisville City collected its fourth goal in the 22′ minute when Abdou Thiam was open on the right side of the box, drew the keeper out of the goal box, and tucked a shot into the left corner.

“I think Abdou is a perfect example of learning a lot of lessons in his first year and coming back and applying them,” Hackworth said. “We thought this the whole time that him coming back here was going to be really important. We saw so many good qualities last year, but, at the same time, we knew that there was so much room for growth.”

Louisville City carried a 4-0 lead into the half and brought in a new lineup for the second half. The Boys in Purple started the match with Chris Hubbard in goal, Oscar Jimenez, Alexis Souahy, Sean Totsch and Pat McMahon on the backline, DelPiccolo, Corben Bone and Napo Matsoso in the midfield with George Davis IV, Lancaster, and Thiam upfront.

In the second half, Louisville City went with Ben Lundt in goal, Oscar Jimenez, Wes Charpie, Jimmy Ockford, and Akil Watts as defenders, Speedy Williams, Niall McCabe, and Magnus Rasmussen in the midfield with Brian Ownby, Luke Spencer, and Antoine Hoppnenot at forward. Academy signee Elijah Wynder replaced Jimenez early in the second half and helped LouCity close out the match.

“We’ve been going hard,” Hackworth said. “We’ve been doing double days for almost four weeks now. When you put that much volume on the players’ legs you want to manage the minutes. Because of our quality, we have been able to do that.”

Neither team scored in the second half and Louisville City cruised to a 4-0 decision. The club will finish its preseason schedule Saturday at 5 p.m. with an open scrimmage vs. the University of Kentucky at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky.

Louisville City signs defender Wes Charpie

TUESDAY, FEB. 25, 2020 – Louisville City Football Club announced the signing of defender Wes Charpie on Tuesday. Charpie joined Louisville City on its preseason training trip to Herriman, Utah, for the 2020 Wasatch Cup.

“Wes is a versatile defender that we know well,” Louisville City coach and Sporting Director John Hackworth said. “While he has primarily played as a right-back or left-back during his professional career, we thought that with his physical abilities that he could make the transition to be a central defender. During the matches in Utah, he played well as one of our left center backs. In addition, he is a person of character who we feel will fit well with our culture.”

The 27-year old Florida native will be eligible immediately pending federation approval. Charpie played in all three matches during the Wasatch Cup trip, helping Louisville City win the Cup with wins over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Real Monarchs.

“Joining Louisville City is a great opportunity for me,” Charpie said. “Louisville City is a club known around the country to be first-class, and players all around the league want to play here – not only for how Louisville City runs its club – but also because of the incredible success they’ve had over the first five seasons. I’m excited to get the opportunity to join this team so we can try to bring another championship here to Louisville.”

Charpie began his path to the pros while playing with USL League Two side Reading United during the summers while he was a four-year starter at the University of South Florida. An All-American Athletic Conference selection in 2014, Charpie was selected with the eighth pick of the second round of the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. Charpie played for Toronto FC II in 2015, moved to Saint Louis FC in 2016 and the Jacksonville Armada in 2018 before spending last season playing for Memphis 901 FC.

Charpie will wear No. 6 for Louisville City. Louisville City will play Forward Madison from USL League One in a preseason match Tuesday afternoon before closing out the preseason schedule Saturday at the University of Kentucky. Louisville City opens the 2020 USL Championship schedule March 7 at North Carolina FC.

TUESDAY, FEB. 25, 2020 – Louisville City Football Club will host Forward Madison from USL League One at a private scrimmage Tuesday afternoon.

The match will pit the 2019 USL Championship Eastern Conference Title-Winners vs. the darlings of USL League One in a friendly meant to test both teams in preparation for the upcoming season.

After beating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and securing a point from a match vs. Union Omaha, Louisville City won the 2020 Wasatch Cup on Saturday with a win over the Real Monarchs.

Forward Madison began its preseason campaign with a loss to Memphis 901 FC last weekend. After playing Louisville City, they’ll head to Saint Louis on Feb. 29, before returning home to host UW-Parkside at Madison College on the morning of March 14 before traveling to Milwaukee to play Marquette University on March 21.

While Tuesday’s match is not a public event due to heavy rains in the area, Louisville City fans and supporters can follow along on LouCity’s Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Fans looking to watch Louisville City in person can attend Louisville City’s Feb. 29 preseason match vs. Kentucky. Admission is free and the match will kick off at 5 p.m. at the University of Kentucky’s Wendell and Vickie Bell Soccer Complex.

LouCity wins 2020 Wasatch Cup

HERRIMAN, UTAH – Louisville City FC is bringing home hardware from its preseason trip to Utah. LouCity beat the host Real Monarchs 3-1 in the final match of the round-robin event to win the 2020 Wasatch Cup Saturday morning at the Zions Bank Real Academy.

“I’m really pleased with the performance,” Louisville City coach John Hackworth said. “We really executed in all phases. It was a great way to end a long trip like this. I really felt good about our preparation and then when you have those ideas and then your players go out and implement it, it’s a really nice thing.”

Louisville City held a two-point lead on the Monarchs and Union Omaha in the Wasatch Cup table heading into Saturday morning’s rematch of the 2019 USL Championship Final. The Boys in Purple had four points after beating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and notching a point for a draw vs. Union Omaha.

With Saturday’s 3-1 win, LouCity finished the event with seven points, clinching the Wasatch Cup trophy.

Louisville City started the match with a lineup full of attacking talent with 2018 Golden Boot winner Cameron Lancaster up top along with Abdou Thiam, Brian Ownby, and Magnus Rasmussen, who led the team in goals in 2019. Corben Bone and Speedy Williams joined Rasmussen in the middle with Oscar Jimenez, Alexis Souahy, Jimmy Ockford, and Pat McMahon along the back four. Ben Lundt started the match in goal for LouCity.

Louisville City started the match strong, getting a goal on a beautifully-placed shot by Thiam in the 7′ with an assist to Ownby. Then Louisville City pushed the lead to 2-0 when Lancaster scored on a corner kick from Jimenez in the 25′. The corner was deflected by Rasmussen to Lancaster who quickly put it into the back of the net.

Just over two minutes later, Louisville City went ahead 3-0 on a goal by Ownby with an assist to Rasmussen. After giving up a goal in the 34′, Louisville City went into halftime with a 3-1 lead.

City started the second half with a similar lineup to the first half, but started making substitutions in the 61′. Chris Hubbard came in as goalkeeper with Jimenez joined by Sean Totsch, Wesley Charpie and Akil Watts on the back line. Napo Matsoso, Paolo DelPiccolo, and Niall McCabe were in the middle with George Davis IV, Antoine Hoppenot and Cameron Lancaster up top.
