Louisville City FC rallied Saturday night on the road for a 5-1, Kings’ Cup series victory over rival Saint Louis FC that featured some eye-popping numbers.

2 – A pair of second-year LouCity players, Kadeem Dacres and Magnus Rasmussen, are tied with three goals apiece all-time in the Kings’ Cup series with Saint Louis FC.

3– Rassmusen, who secured a brace against Saint Louis and was voted Man of the Match, has now totaled three goals in LouCity’s last two games. He also had the first goal in club history last year against Saint Louis.

4– LouCity pushed its current winning streak to four games, the longest this season and the second-longest in team history.

5 – Against FC Saint Louis, LouCity scored five goals for the first time this season.  The club scored a franchise-best six in a 2015 game against the OKC Energy. Before Saturday, the club had scored four goals at most in a 2016 match.

6– Saturday marked the sixth meeting between Louisville City and Saint Louis FC.  LouCity holds the series lead with a record of 3-1-2.

11– LouCity moved to 11-2-2 when playing away from Louisville Slugger Field this season, bettering last year’s mark of 10-2-2. 

12 – In its six games against Saint Louis FC, LouCity has scored a total of 12 goals, most against any single USL opponent.

59 – Though 29 games, LouCity has by far eclipsed its 2015 point total of 48 racked up in 28 matches. Last year, the club also finished second in the USL’s Eastern Conference.

With a home postseason game clinched, Louisville City FC winger George Davis IV said this week the club’s final two regular-season matches are “about putting the pieces together and taking some good momentum into the playoffs.”

So far, so good.

LouCity will carry its three-game winning streak — with each of them clean sheet victories — into Saturday’s showdown with Saint Louis FC. A win or draw clinches the USL Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed for Louisville, while anything less than a victory would end Saint Louis’ playoff hopes.

But before battling their Kings’ Cup series rival, LouCity players will first compete amongst themselves. The club’s last seven games have fallen with one a week, making for less need to rest players and rotate through the starting 11 than throughout LouCity’s busy — and humid — summer.

The pieces are coming together.

“I think it’s something that when you look at last season, there were times when we didn’t have enough on the bench, and I think people could get complacent at times,” said coach James O’Connor. “Now they realize there’s no area for complacency. I think it’s exactly what all good squads have — great competition.”

The best evidence came in last Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Richmond Kickers. Defender Ben Newnam and forward Chandler Hoffman, LouCity’s leading scorer, appeared in neither the starting lineup nor the bench. But Louisville posted one of its most complete efforts yet, shutting down a Kickers team that entered having played 10 straight games unbeaten.

Newnam could find his way back into the lineup in St. Louis, as normal right back Kyle Smith is out on yellow card accumulation. While Tarek Morad worked with starters at left back during the open portion of Thursday’s training, Newnam took the right. O’Connor said Enrique Montano is also “in contention” to play.

“Coach does a great job of making sure the best team every week is out there, so it doesn’t necessarily depend on if you had a great game last week,” Newnam said.  “It depends on the week leading up to the game.”

As for the club’s depth, “I think it’s probably one of our most dangerous weapons,” Newnam added. “We all get along great off the field as well. It helps. You don’t hold grudges. You just play for each other, and I think that’s what’s going to win us the championship.”

Kickoff Saturday at World Wide Technology Soccer Park is set for 8:30 p.m., and the lineup chosen by O’Connor could very well serve as a playoff preview.

Cameron Lancaster got the start at the striker spot against Richmond and produced, converting on an early penalty kick earned by Kadeem Dacres. Magnus Rasmussen, the club’s regular No. 10, also scored on a 55th-minute strike from just outside the box.

Hoffman could return up top. And at either wing position, Andrew Lubahn (right) and Davis IV (left) have proven able to spell Dacres and Mark-Anthony Kaye. In the defending midfield, Guy Abend and Paolo DelPiccolo have rotated alongside captain Aodhan Quinn, another decision that comes down to the hot hand — or foot — leading up to games.

Even rookie goalkeeper Tim Dobrowolski succeeded in his only action of the year, posting a clean sheet Sept. 3 against FC Montreal with Greg Ranjitsingh away on international duty for Trinidad and Tobago.

“I think it’s a strength of ours, and it’s definitely been an advantage for us,” said Davis IV, a veteran midfielder who made his last start Aug. 19 against the evenual USL champion New York Red Bulls II. “There’s times when players are going to be called on, and that’s what’s happened

“…It’s going to happen again where players who might not be on the team now are going to be called upon at some point. It’s their duty to come in the game and make an impact.”

The second edition of the Kings’ Cup series comes to an end this weekend when Louisville City FC travels to play Saint Louis FC.

While a victory — or possibly even less — would solidify the USL Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed for LouCity, this one’s a must-win for Saint Louis FC to remain in contention for a playoff bid.

History: Saint Louis FC and LouCity opened their inaugural seasons against each other in 2015, then both as members of the Eastern Conference. The green and navy blue-clad club moved to the West for 2016, off a ninth-place finish, and retains and outside shot of making its first postseason appearance.

Series with LouCity: Saint Louis and Louisville played their inaugural openers against each other in a game won 2-0 by LouCity at Slugger Field. The boys in purple then went on to claim the first Kings’ Cup on goal differential and are in line for another after defeating Saint Louis 2-0 at home on May 14.

Current form: Saint Louis has been deceptively good in its last two games. While a 2-1 loser at FC Cincinnati, the club equalized at Nippert Stadium late before allowing the game-winner on a penalty for a hand ball in extra time. Saint Louis bounced back last Saturday to beat San Antonio FC by a 3-1 score.

What to know: Saint Louis FC on Aug. 15 announced a new coach, moving away from Dale Schilly while promoting Tim Leonard, an assistant coach, on an interim basis. The club started this season by going 6-5-4 but then went 1-4-3 in Schilly’s final eight games. The club is 1-2-2 since the change.

Player to watch: Irving Herrera moved himself back into the USL’s Golden Boot race by registering a hat trick against San Antonio. The forward from El Salvador has scored as many as four goals in a single game this season while totaling 14 of them. Herrera, the reigning USL Player of the Week,  sits one off league leaders Sean Okoli and Jack McBean.

Another to know: Forward Jordan Roberts has scored his three goals this season in limited playing time, doing so in games when he appeared for 30, 32 and 52 minutes. Since Saint Louis’ coaching change, Roberts has seen a boost in minutes, going the full 90 in two of the last three games. In the other, he remained on for 89 minutes before subbed out.
