LouCity Stays Unbeaten at Home with Dramatic Win over ATL2
Louisville City FC stayed unbeaten at home after a 2-1 win over Atlanta United FC 2 in front of over 8,600 on Saturday night at Slugger Field! A goal from forward Cameron Lancaster in the first half made it five on the year for him, while a stoppage-time penalty from Ilija Ilic earned the three points.
What Happened?
Coach James O’Connor made just one change from the team that fell 2-0 to Nashville SC last week, swapping in George Davis IV for Brian Ownby.
City came out on the offensive, creating a few chances that ATL2 ‘keeper Paul Christenson was equal to in the opening minutes. Eventually forcing their way through, forward Cameron Lancaster settled a deflected pass in the box and produced a calm finish to put City in front, 1-0, after 24 minutes.
ATL2 was quick to respond with a goal of their own in the 31st minute, but City ‘keeper Greg Ranjitsingh produced a pair of remarkable saves to keep the score level heading into halftime.
Into the second half, City continued to pile pressure on the Atlanta goal as attacking subs Luke Spencer, Ilija Ilic, and Magnus Rasmussen all looked to make an impact off the bench. Approaching stoppage time, a golden chance for Spencer came in off a cross from defender Oscar Jimenez but the forward was only able to head down in testing Christensen.
However, one minute into stoppage time, LouCity earned a crucial penalty that saw defender Shawn Nicklaw enter the referee’s book. Stepping up, Ilic buried the spot kick from 12 yards out to put his side in front for good and seal a 2-1 win.
The Key Points:
- Forward Cameron Lancaster scored his fifth goal of the year to put City in front
- Atlanta midfielder Laurent Kiessiedov beat City ‘keeper Greg Ranjitsingh to level the scoring after a half hour
- A goal from the penalty spot in the first minute of stoppage time by Ilija Ilic sealed the three points for City
O’Connor’s Takeaways:
On getting back into the win column:
“Very pleased. I thought we kept going and kept going and kept going. I thought second half especially we had a number of chances and we felt as though we all deserved to win the game. I thought they put up a great fight, I thought they really did. I thought they made it very difficult for us, but I think we can be pleased with the intensity and the performance from the guys tonight.”
On heavy legs on the team:
“Lots of really heavy legs. I think that’s why it was so important. I think for us it’s difficult. We’ve gone from rain and a little bit of cold to now all of a sudden, we’ve got hot and humid in the blink of an eye. And the hot and humidity has come when we’ve got three games in whatever it is, six days and then we’ve got another one Wednesday. We try to manage that and that’s why the players deserve enormous credit. There are a few that have played all three games and have to really dig deep and really push through in tough conditions.
On Cameron Lancaster’s confidence:
“I think it’s fantastic. I think he’s got tremendous quality. I think when you look at even his finish tonight first half and free kick, (Cameron Lancaster)’s capable of scoring from 30, 35 yards out as he is from 10. So, I think when you look at (Cameron Lancaster), when you look at Ilija Ilic) coming on, Luke (Spencer) getting the penalty coming in, I think we’re really blessed with those three guys. Again, I thought Magnus (Rasmussen) when he came on, (Ilija Ilic), the substitutes made an impact. And I think for us, it’s trying to make sure everyone who’s participating is maximizing the opportunity, and that’s something that they all did really, really well tonight. They left everything out there. They kept fighting, kept pushing, kept going, so it’s great for us.”
On Ilija taking the penalty:
“(Ilija Ilic) wanted to take it. I think for us, obviously Kyle (Smith) missed the other night. Kyle and Ilija are both excellent penalty takers. I have great confidence in all the guys. I’m just delighted to see them step up and score.”
On making three offensive substitutions:
“Yeah, I think for us we’re desperate to win every game. So, I think we felt as if we had good control. Just thought we needed a little bit more quality as we started to tire. I think it became evident with some of our passing at times it looked like some of our lads had gotten really heavy legs. And that’s why I think the boys deserve enormous credit to keep going and pin them in the way we did in the second half. Really keep fighting and keep pushing and not just accept the draw. I think that’s something for most teams they’d be happy with, say ‘oh we’ll take it. It’s not our night tonight.’ No, we kept going and pushing and kept driving and that was fantastic to see from all the guys tonight.”
On Wednesday’s meeting with Saint Louis FC:
“I think it’ll be nice to see the lads. I think for them, they obviously had a great win midweek up in Minnesota and obviously had no game today. I’m sure they’ll be rested and relaxed. They’re probably on the beach resting, getting ready for Wednesday. They’re great people over there. I have to say, Anthony (Pulis) is someone I have tremendous respect for. Sean (Reynolds) and Kadeem (Dacres) are two great guys. It’ll be lovely to see them. We always enjoy seeing our old players because they mean so much to us even though they’re at different clubs and Anthony’s been a great friend of mine. I played with Anthony (Pulis) during our time together in Orlando and obviously played for his dad. There’s people there I have a lot of respect for.”
Player Point of View: Ilija Ilic
On a busy week:
“Yeah, busy week for everyone trying to rotate the squad, try to keep everyone 100 percent so yeah, busy week.”
On frustration up until the penalty:
“That’s the one thing that separates us from teams from previous years. We don’t get that goal, but we still keep going, we’re still chasing that goal and sometimes you get rewarded and sometimes you don’t. Tonight we got rewarded.”
On the importance of getting back to winning ways in USL:
“Sometimes we say, ‘We don’t get nervous’ but yeah, we still feel pressure when that happens. You don’t want to stay on that losing side. You want to win that game. Sometimes its really heard to bounce back on the winning side, so it felt really good to get back tonight.”
On Cameron Lancaster’s confidence:
“I’ve been playing with [Cameron Lancaster] for four years now. I’ll say this: I’ve never seen him playing like this. This is the best football he’s ever been playing. He’s confident, he feels good about himself so he’s going until the end of the season.”
On the PK decision:
“So Kyle [Smith] missed the last penalty, so we had a meeting about that. No one doubted him and no one made him feel bad, we just said whoever is most confident at the time should take the penalty. I told Kyle I felt really confident and to please let me take the penalty and he said ‘Okay’ so there you go.”
On sticking it high:
“Exactly.”
On Wednesday’s Open Cup clash with Saint Louis FC and seeing Sean Reynolds again:
“Sean Reynolds and another guy from my college team Lewis Hilton. We’re looking forward to playing them. They’re a good team and they have been playing good football. It’s going to be a hard game for us and we give them a lot of credit so it will be a fun game to watch. I’d like to invite them to come out to Lynn Stadium.”
On playing at Lynn Stadium:
“That was actually my second time. Last week I said to media, ‘I love playing on a real football field’.”

What to Know: #LOUvATL
Louisville City FC is seeking a comeback after two straight league defeats dropped them to third in the Eastern Conference, though with a game in hand. City fell on Derby Day by one goal in Indianapolis, then dropped a 2-0 contest against Nashville SC on Mother’s Day.
LouCity is also in a bit of unchartered territory in regards to back-to-back defeats. You would have to look back to two straight losses in July 2016 (FCC, OCB) to find the last time O’Connor’s squad has been in this position. The last time the club dropped three straight in the USL regular season? September 2015, where they closed out with defeats at NYRBII, Charleston Battery, and Saint Louis FC.

Last Time Out
Louisville City FC traveled to Music City to play Nashville SC for the second time in the 2018 season, beating their foes 2-0 on opening day in Louisville.
The reverse fixture also saw a reverse scoreline, with the future MLS club knocking off LouCity, 2-0, on two goals from midfielder Lebo Moloto. The South African footballer found the back of the net once in the first half and again in the 86th minute to bury the game, while City was shut out for just the second time this year.

Rewind against ATLANTA UNITED FC 2
The only time these two have met previously came on Saturday, April 21 at Coolray Field in Gwinnett County, GA, with the pair sharing the points.
LouCity forward Cameron Lancaster opened the scoring in the second half to tally his second goal of the year only for a converted stoppage-time penalty from ATL midfielder Andrew Carleton to level the line.
KY Lottery Kees to the Game
Looking to keep all three points in Louisville, here are a few Kees to the Game presented by Kentucky Lottery:
1. Feed the forward line
2. Stay compact defensively
3. Use the size advantage
James O’Connor’s pre-match press conference:
On lulls in the season:
“We’ve had it throughout my time here—you get an instance where you get a run of games where you maybe start wrong or the referee… there’s something. For us, we never look and try to make excuses. We always look at our own performance. We look inwardly, and I look at myself first and think how I can get better but more importantly, what can we learn? So, what can we learn from these experiences? When you’re winning three-, four-, five-nil, it’s easy. Everyone is excited and everyone moves on. But, every experience both positive and negative you should be trying to learn from that experience. For us, there’s an opportunity for growth and there are lessons here that, if we’re sensible, we can learn from and take into the rest of the season. If we win our game in hand, we go back to the top of the table. For us it’s about perspective while also trying to understand what allows for success and try to get more of those actions that allow for success.”
On three matches in six days:
“In the cup, you’re actually allowed five international players. In USL, the Canadians are classed as international players so it adds a different dynamic. We have eight international players when you include Greg [Ranjitsingh] so three of those obviously can’t be involved. When we’ve got a small squad, there’s three that are gone then you have a few others that are missing through injury and all of the sudden you start to lose some numbers. We’ve tried to prepare for that as best we can this week. Unfortunately, Franno [Shaun Francis] came on coming back from a hamstring injury and looks like maybe he’s hurt his hamstring again but there are certain aspects that you can’t control so you focus on what you can control. You need to be prepared and ready to go. The biggest thing for us is making sure we get our preparation right, we give our best effort, we got on our front foot, then we play to enjoy the game because we all play to enjoy the game. That’s what we’re hoping to do on Wednesday.”
On squad depth:
“Throughout the course of this year, we’ve had very unusual circumstances. We’ve never had the stuff we’ve had. To be honest, I’m sort of sick of talking about injuries. I’d rather focus on the ones who are fit and let’s go get after it! Whoever it is in the eleven, all our guys are capable of playing. So for us, no excuses, the eleven that are picked let’s go out there and give a good, strong performance and let’s get back to the performances we know we’re all capable of.”
On playing in front of home support again:
“We’re really excited to play in front of our supporters, I think we’ve said that many times. I want to also thank all of the supporters who came to Nashville. For both the away games in Indy and Nashville, we’ve had tremendous support. Genuinely, it is heartfelt thanks from myself and all of the players to everyone who has traveled down. Again, they made the trip on Mother’s Day and the journey the week before was Derby yet we had people travel up to Indy. I think it’s an indication of the support we’ve garnered throughout our time and it’s a massive thank you from everyone associated with the club to everyone who’s traveled.”

LouCity Roughs Up Long Island in Explosive Open Cup Victory
Louisville City FC got back to winning ways in an explosive 5-0 thrashing of the Long Island Rough Riders (PDL) in the Second Round of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup.
The result means LouCity will return to Lynn Stadium next Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m., facing the winner of the Saint Louis FC-Duluth FC in the Third Round of the competition.
What Happened?
As the teams settled in on a toasty night in Louisville, LouCity looked the aggressors early on as they created a number of chances that the Long Island ‘keeper–who produced an incredible performance in net–was equal to.
However, in a move that would produce a goal ten out of ten times, Kyle Smith opened the scoring off a perfect pass from Ilija Ilic before the half-hour to give City the advantage. As the half edged closer to a close, Ilic turned provider to scorer when he found the back of the net after 37 minutes to double the team’s lead. At the break, the “Boys in Purple” held a steadfast advantage over the visitors.
More to come in the second half, City continued to pile pressure on the Rough Riders’ goal and found their third of the night after the hour mark. Breaking down the left flank, Oscar Jimenez cut inside then out again to leave his defender in a tizzy and serve a perfect ball across goal. Forward Luke Spencer, who made his first start since the March 31 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies, slid to tap home and put his side up three.
In the waning moments of the match, substitute Brian Ownby produced a moment of magic on the touchline. Dancing around his defender, Ownby’s touch never let him down as he circled his way through the penalty area before hitting home at the far post for City’s fourth. Finally, Lancaster truly put the icing on the cake with a stunning free kick in the 86th minute as LouCity wrapped up an impressive 5-0 win to advance.
The Key Points:
- The “Boys in Purple” looked dominant throughout with the first goal coming from Kyle Smith after 25 minutes
- Ilija Ilic added a goal to his assist on Smith’s tally in the 37th to go two-up at the break
- Spencer netted City’s third on a curling ball in from Oscar Jimenez
- Ownby dazzled the crowd with some fancy footwork before beating the Rough Riders’ ‘keeper at his far post
- Lancaster sealed the impressive victory with a peach a free kick just minutes before fulltime

O'Connor speaks with media ahead of Open Cup clash
City Come Up Short in Trip to Nashville
Louisville City FC dropped a second straight contest on Sunday night, Nashville SC the thorn in their side in a 2-0 loss at First Tennessee Park in the reverse fixture.
Two goals from midfielder Lebo Moloto propelled the hosts as LouCity failed to hit the target for just the second time in the 2018 campaign so far.
What Happened?
Attacking from the getgo, Nashville imposed themselves on the “Boys in Purple” as surging runs from Lebo Moloto and Ropapa Mensah began to cause trouble for the LouCity backline early on. Despite creating a number of opportunities in the opening few minutes of play, Nashville was unable to break down a staunch LouCity defense.
However, slipping in behind, Mensah turned a pass on the byline towards Moloto, and the forward didn’t waste any time in getting an important toe on the ball to send it past LouCity ‘keeper Greg Ranjitsingh to open the scoring. At the break, the visitors trailed 1-0.
Second half changes saw Shaun Francis, Luke Spencer, and Ilija Ilic all introduced as LouCity attempted to turn the game on its head, but their work was canceled out by Moloto’s second of the night in the 84th minute to ultimately seal the points for the home side.
The Key Points:
- Lebo Moloto opened the scoring after 37 minutes off a Ropapa Mensah cross
- Moloto added his second of the night in the 84th to secure the three points
O’Connor’s Takeaways:
Overall reaction:
“Obviously, we’re hugely disappointed. I think when you look at our performance today, we weren’t at it. I don’t think we’ve played well. I thought Nashville at times played well, sat deep and then were able to counter and cause us some problems. Overall, I can’t recall them having too many real shots. I thought they took their goals well. I thought we weren’t really creating enough or at times moving the ball quickly enough. I thought, normally for how we’ve played, we seemed to just be a little bit sluggish. Ideally we needed to move the ball a lot quicker than we were today.”
On the attack:
“I think again, for us, it’s about a better understanding of what’s required. I think something, for me in the last two weeks, our spatial understanding needs to be a lot better. It’s tight and narrow and there are two compact units in there that are sliding across and I think we need to do a better job of understanding where the space is. Again, that’s on me to try to emphasize that to make sure there’s better understanding of where that space is and how to capitalize on it. I think too often we found ourselves in areas and made the wrong choice—bad pass, bad decision—in our quality at times. That was something that was really frustrating.”
On what he liked:
“Not enough, being honest. Nowhere near enough for our quality and how we’re capable of playing. There were too many things that we weren’t happy with.”
On the Open Cup factoring in team selection:
“I think you obviously need to be mindful of three games in such a short period. For us, it’s trying to make sure we put out a team that is capable. I think all of our players are capable. I think for us, it’s disappointing because for where our level is at, we haven’t hit that level today. I need to do a better job at making sure the understanding of space is definitely there.”
On what his team can learn:
“There’s lot for us to reflect upon and look at. I think it’s a case of making sure we sit down with the guys and go through that. That’s on me to make sure there’s better understanding of where the space is to make better decisions. I need to do a way better job of making sure that the guys understand where the space is and try and help them with that decision-making.”
On the week’s focus:
“It is [a heavier week] but I’m not really interested in that. When you analyze the league position, we’re in a fantastic position in the league. I think we just need to be mindful of the last couple of games. There’s some lessons there that we need to be sharper on and, as I said, I need to do a better job of making sure there’s a better understanding of situations that have popped up. There are some examples again tonight that I clearly need to do a better job of making sure there’s understanding with that. For us, it’s now focusing on making sure that the players have a little bit of rest, make sure we’re ready to go for what will be a very tough game on Wednesday, and try and prepare for that as best we can.”
