Ray Serrano scored his first career hat trick and Chris Donovan registered a record-setting four assists as Louisville City FC thrashed rival Indy Eleven 4-1 before 10,328 fans at Lynn Family Stadium Saturday.
LouCity (12-9-7, 43 points) moves into fourth place in the Eastern Conference. The club can clinch home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs with a win at Sporting JAX on Wednesday.
The win is LouCity’s third straight in all competitions. It is the club’s first three-game winning streak since April 25.
Donovan’s four assists set a new USL Championship single-game record.
It was an eye-catching LouCity display. The only blemish was a 71st-minute Indy goal, thwarting LouCity’s bid for a third-straight clean sheet.
“I think there’s still a lot of work to do, but it definitely feels like we’re on a good path right now. But, we’ve got to keep it going,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said.
Serrano enjoyed a jackpot, of sorts. The 24-year-old, who wears jersey No. 7, became the seventh player in LouCity history to tally three goals in a game, with the first goal coming in the game’s seventh minute.
His two other goals came in the 43rd and 51st minutes, all on Donovan feeds.
“He was brilliant, on all phases of the game — defensively, with the ball — I thought he was excellent,” Bird said. “Obviously, he took his goals really well. I thought we were efficient in the final third.”
“I can’t do it without my teammates, and I’m thankful to be here,” Serrano said. “(I’m) grateful to come out and represent this badge every night, every Saturday. So (I) couldn’t be more thankful.”
Donovan was the playmaker again on Kevon Lambert’s 33rd minute goal, completing a quick give-and-go to set up the Jamaican.
“Strikers always judged on goals, right? He’s a natural goal scorer, but he does so much more than that,” Bird said of Donovan. “His ability to hold the ball up, to attack space when center backs vacate space. And then, yeah, obviously the weight of the pass, the timing of the pass was excellent tonight.”
Louisville played with flair and confidence from the opening whistle. Statistically, though, the game flattered Indy more than the scoreboard. LouCity finished with more shots (14 to 9), but the two sides were equally accurate with five attempts on target. Louisville finished with a 55.8% share of possession.
Lambert led LouCity once again defensively, claiming nine clearances — giving him 40 total over the last three games.
“Now the guys are saying there’s a magnet in my head and like, like a ball magnet pretty much,” Lambert said. He won two of four aerial duels Saturday. “So the ball just keeps finding my head.”
Indy’s goal in the 71st minute was also record-setting. Midfielder Aodhan Quinn, a former Louisville City captain, tallied his 67th career assist, setting the USL Championship career record.
Louisville City moved into the top four thanks, in part, to to Eliot Goldthorp of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. The 24-year-old tallied the equalizer in Pittsburgh’s 1-1 draw with Rhode Island, scoring in the fifth minute of stoppage time. That result allowed LouCity to move into the top four Saturday night.
LouCity’s Cooper Conley made his competitive debut on the night. The 19-year-old, playing on a USL Academy contract that preserves NCAA eligibility, found the back of the net late on, only to be denied his first LouCity goal by the referee’s whistle for an earlier foul.
LouCity returns to action Wednesday at Sporting JAX, with the chance to clinch a home playoff game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
The boys in purple return home for the regular-season finale on Saturday against Detroit City FC. It will be Silent Disco Night at Lynn Family Stadium. For tickets and more information, visit LouCity.com/disco.
