If Friday night was the dress rehearsal, the real thing figures to be dramatic.
Louisville City FC and Hartford Athletic went blow-for-blow Friday in a 2-2 draw that featured three penalty kicks and eight bookings, including a red card to Hartford’s Britton Fischer, at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford, Conn.
Friday’s USL Championship regular season game preceded next week’s Prinx Tires USL Cup Final, which will be contested between the same two teams at the same stadium.
Though there wasn’t a trophy on the line Friday, there were high stakes — both LouCity and Hartford are in the thick of the race for the top four in the Eastern Conference, which would offer home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
And the game, played on a chilly, windy night in New England, looked like it was contested by two teams hungry for a win — it was scrappy, physical and temperamental, and by the end both sides might have come out a bit bruised.
LouCity, though, was arguably the more disappointed, after leading with a man advantage with fewer than 20 minutes to play.
“(It’s) two points lost, really, from the position we were in,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said.
With the draw, LouCity inched closer to clinching a playoff place, now 10 points clear of ninth-place Miami FC. It does, though, prevent LouCity from moving into the top four right now — a win would have seen LouCity take fourth at least until Saturday.
And that win was oh so close.
Well into the second half, LouCity was in the driver’s seat, leading 2-1 and up a man after Fischer’s red card. That was until the 73rd minute, when referee Mark Verso awarded Hartford a penalty kick, “out of nowhere,” in the opinion of Bird.
Hartford’s Michee Ngalina put the spot kick away, tying the game at 2-2, and snatching LouCity’s momentum.
From there, LouCity “lost control,” according to Bird, leading to a draw that left the team feeling, “gutted” in the words of forward Quenzi Huerman.
“We get a penalty against us and we lost control of momentum, we lost control of territory and tempo in the last 20 (minutes) and that’s disappointing,” Bird said.
Said Huerman: “We had enough chances to put the game away. I thought it was lacking a bit of urgency, maybe a bit more control in those moments, but I felt like when we’re up a man and we’re up a goal, we should just put the game away.”
It was Huerman’s 53rd-minute penalty that gave LouCity the lead. It capped off a whirlwind opening minutes of the second half, which saw substitute Jake Morris score for LouCity and Fischer sent off in conceding the penalty.
Taylor Davila supplied the assist on Morris’ goal, his ninth league assist of the season. That puts him tied for the league lead and equals his USL Championship career high, set last season in a Player of the Year campaign. It was his 10th assist of the season, across all competitions.
“I think when you come on at halftime, you just want to bring energy,” Morris said of coming on at halftime. “You know, sometimes when things happen, sometimes it results in someone else getting an opportunity.”
LouCity trailed at halftime, after Verso awarded Hartford a penalty in the 11th minute, scored by Augustine Williams.
In overcoming that early deficit, Friday’s point in the standings was the 13th LouCity has gained from a losing position. Only New Mexico United (14) and Colorado Springs (16) have recovered more, per Opta.
In all, the game was evenly played. Hartford finished with the slight edge in shots (13-11) while LouCity had more attempts on target (5-4), and though Louisville won the territory battle, taking 61.7% of the possession with 83 entries into the Hartford final third compared to 48 on the other side.
Now, it’s on the USL Cup Final, which the two sides will contest at Trinity Health Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. ET.
“We knew what we were going to come up against (in Hartford). We knew the arena we were stepping into and what it was going to be. It was going to be a fight. And I thought we matched up well in that regard,” Bird said. “We know it’s going to be the same next week.”
A win would give LouCity a trophy for the third season running and complete the club’s cabinet — LouCity would be the first USL club to win the USL Championship title, Players’ Shield and USL Cup.
