Against the league’s best defense, a 0-0 draw might feel like a win. For Louisville City FC, though, it felt like a missed opportunity.
Louisville City FC and Detroit City FC tussled to a 0-0 draw on Saturday night, before 10,082 fans at Lynn Family Stadium. It was the second 0-0 draw between the two sides this season, the first coming in June in the Prinx Tires USL Cup.
The result was LouCity’s first league clean sheet for six games, dating to a 1-0 win over Hartford Athletic on July 4, and its first overall since a 0-0 draw at the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Aug. 13, also the Prinx Tires USL Cup quarterfinal.
It was Louisville’s ninth clean sheet of the season overall, and fifth in USL Championship play.
LouCity came in as the league’s third-highest scoring team, bagging 37 goals. Detroit boasted the USL Championship’s best defense, conceding just 17 goals, fewest in the league.
Detroit’s defense held — as did LouCity’s for that matter — and the two teams split the points.
LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird lamented what he saw as a slow start, noting that “it took us 35 minutes to get into the game, and that’s not good enough.”
“We’ve got to do a better job in the final third. Really poor decision-making and execution, but the decision-making was really frustrating,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said, though he was pleased that his team showed improvement in the second half after its slow start.
Statistically, LouCity was the more threatening team on the night. The boys in purple managed 15 shots to Detroit’s 10, including four shots on target to Detroit’s two. Louisville had a higher expected goals value (1.01-0.62) and had the game’s only big chance, per Opta — generated by Manny Perez.
In the second half, LouCity took an 8-3 shooting advantage, three shots on target to one.
“Certainly (it was) a better second half, more control,” Bird said. “We looked like, as we should be, the team trying to win the game, but we ultimately come away disappointed we didn’t win the game.”
Danny Faundez earned the clean sheet in goal, making a pair of saves on the night. It was his third clean sheet of the campaign.
“I think we were a lot cleaner tonight in the back, you know, with our headers, clearances, passes,” LouCity defender Brandon Dayes said of the shutout. Dayes won both of his tackles on the night. “I think that was a — there was improvement there. But I think now we just have to put more of a complete performance out there and have more improvement in the final third and put some (goals) away.”
In the standings, the draw keeps the status quo — LouCity (9-8-5, 32 points) remains fifth. Elsewhere, the league-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds also drew 0-0. LouCity remains two points back of Pittsburgh for fourth place and a home playoff game.
At the other end of the playoff spectrum, though, Hartford Athletic defeated Birmingham Legion 3-2. That result means LouCity is just five points above eighth place, 10 points clear of ninth-place Miami FC.
This was the third meeting of a scheduled four between Louisville City and Detroit City. The two sides will meet again in the regular season finale, on Oct. 24, back at Lynn Family Stadium.
“This league, every team has quality and it’s hard, but it’s good that we’re going to see them again,” LouCity defender Manny Perez said. “And this game is good momentum for the next time we see them, and we’re home. So we look forward to that.”
Next week, LouCity will play three games in seven days, starting with a trip to Rhode Island FC on Saturday, Sept. 5.
That will be followed by the Prinx Tires USL Cup semifinal, at San Antonio FC on Tuesday, Sept. 8.
