The Indy Eleven defeated Louisville City FC on Saturday in Indianapolis, 2-1. Midfielder Jack Blake scored the winning goal for the hosts.
It was Indy’s first win over LouCity since Aug. 31, 2022.
Blake’s winning strike came in the 60th minute, just 48 seconds after LouCity had tied the score at 1-1 through Kyle Adams.
Indy’s Bruno Rendón opened the scoring in the 31st minute, with Indy capitalizing on a LouCity turnover.
“(It was) not good enough across the board, but certainly in the first half, we lacked, I would say, intent, aggressive intent in our play. It was too casual, lacked intent,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said. “I thought the second half, we came out brighter, came out on the front foot, but it was too late. And ultimately, there wasn’t enough quality in the final third.”
The loss drops Louisville (9-8-4, 31 points) to fifth place in the Eastern Conference with nine games remaining in the regular season.
LouCity is 13 points back of the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the conference and Players’ Shield races, and two points back of fourth place, which offers a home playoff game. Louisville is seven points clear of Hartford for eighth, the final playoff position.
Louisville had the better of the stat sheet, but not the scoreboard. LouCity finished with more shots (19-18), shots on target (8-7), corner kicks (11-2), possession (68%-32%) and expected goals (1.24-0.90).
“It’s definitely three points dropped for us,” Adams said. “I think there’s no way that that team should be getting three points off us, let alone one point.”
Adams’ goal was his second league goal for the club, with both coming this season. It came on a Taylor Davila corner kick. Adams won the header at the near post, flicking it past former USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Year Eric Dick.
Indy, however, responded immediately.
Blake and Edward Kizza connected on a give-and-go, with Blake belting a shot into the bottom corner to the right of LouCity goalkeeper Danny Faundez from around 20 yards away.

“It’s really not good enough,” Adams said of conceding so quickly after scoring. “It’s (happened) too many times this year, and we can’t keep doing that to ourselves.”
Indy defended that 2-1 lead for 30 minutes plus just over eight minutes of added time, withstanding nine LouCity shots in that span, including two on target. Blakes’ strike was Indy’s final attempt on goal in the game.
The opener came after a LouCity giveaway. Former Louisville captain Aodhan Quinn, now in his fourth season with Indy, provided the assists as Rendón scored for the first time since July 4, a 2-0 win over the Charleston Battery — coincidentally Indy’s most recent win over a current playoff team until Saturday.
The loss ended a run of six games without a loss for LouCity in the rivalry series with Indy, dating to Aug. 31, 2022 — a stretch of 1,452 days. LouCity still leads the all-time series 13-7-6 in all competitions.
LouCity will return home next week for a playoff rematch with Detroit City FC, which upset top-seeded Louisville in the opening round of last year’s USL Championship Playoffs.
Detroit knocked off Tampa Bay on Saturday at home, 1-0, to move into second place in the Eastern Conference.
“For next week, we’ve got to focus on improving, because we can’t take one step forward and then one step back every other week,” midfielder Taylor Davila said. “You know, we’ve got to keep taking multiple steps forward without taking those steps back.”
