A season-high crowd of 12,358 fans filled Lynn Family Stadium on Saturday, as Louisville City FC earned a 1-1 tie with San Antonio FC.
Backed by the noise of the crowd, LouCity jumped out to an quick start. Mukwelle Akale scored in the 12th minute to give Louisville the early advantage, but Cristian Parano’s 78th minute equalizer nullified it, as the teams shared the spoils in a cross-conference clash.
With San Antonio in second place in the Western Conference, LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird drew positives from the game.
“I’m proud of the performance,” Bird said. “I’m proud of the work rate and the collectiveness, but disappointed in some of the (other) areas.”
The draw keeps LouCity firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. LouCity (8-7-4, 28 points) remains in fourth place, keeping a one-point cushion over the fifth-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
It also serves as a bit of a bounce-back, after LouCity fell 5-4 last week to the league-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies.
“I do feel that when San Antonio scored tonight, there was a better response from our team,” Bird said referencing last week’s lossfd. “We didn’t buckle, we didn’t cave in, we stuck to it. Yeah, we’re disappointed, but at the same time, we know there’s progress in some areas.”
With the smoke still lingering from pregame pyrotechnics, Akale ran in behind the San Antonio defense to receive a perfectly timed pass from Ray Serrano. Akale, a first-year LouCity player, then finished beautifully, cushioning the ball with his left foot to roll it past the goalkeeper.
Louisville City was off and running. The crowd was up and roaring.
“It’s amazing. The adrenaline you get after scoring a goal, seeing all the fans here, seeing your teammates run, be happy for you,” Akale said of the goal and the atmosphere. “I mean, it’s an amazing feeling. You can never forget.”
It was Akale’s third league goal of the season, capping what has been a prominent run of late — the 29-year-old has started in six of his last seven league appearances.
“We were on the front foot, caused them problems in transition, and then we slowly lost the grip on the game, maybe got fatigue towards the end of the half, but we dug in,” Bird said.
The two sides traded jabs for the ensuing hour after the goal, with neither looking altogether threatening — San Antonio finished with an expected goals value of 0.61, just edging out LouCity’s 0.43 output.
That was until the 78th minute, when Cristian Parano exhibited a moment of quality. The 26-year-old Argentine used his preferred left foot to curl the ball past the fingertips of Louisville goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux, after a terrific double-clutched approach where he faked the shot before letting it fly.
While disappointed to not finish off the win, Mukwelle Akale said the result gives the team confidence moving forward.
“Obviously, we had chances to get the second goal, but I feel like championship teams know how to grind out that 1-0 win,” he said. “And we’re close. I feel like we’re taking steps in the right direction, getting ready for when playoffs come. And I feel like we’ll be the best version of ourselves soon.”
Following the draw, LouCity will step out of league play, as the boys in purple visit Tampa Bay for a quarterfinal matchup in the Prinx Tires USL Cup. It will be the second meeting in less than two weeks between the sides.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.
“We obviously owe it to them,” midfielder Evan Davila said. “And they’re going to be thinking the same thing. So it’s going to be a battle. It’s a cup game. We want to win trophies at this club. So it’s going to be a really good game. Both teams are going to bring it.”
That will be followed by a cross-country trip to Orange County SC, the Western Conference leaders. Saturday’s game in Irvine, Calif., will kick off at 10 p.m. ET.
Louisville City won’t return to Lynn Family Stadium until Saturday, Aug. 29, against Detroit City FC. The game is one of five home dates remaining for LouCity this regular season.
