As regular season games go in the USL Championship, Saturday’s bout between Louisville City FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies was an instant classic.
The league-leading Rowdies took a wild 5-4 win at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla., in a game that featured 3-0 scoring runs for both teams, two-goal performances from three individual players, two equalizing goals and ultimately a comeback win for Tampa Bay.
With two of the USL Championship’s premier clubs meeting, the play on the field showcased its quality, serving as an emphatic advertisement for the second-tier league on national television — five of the game’s nine goals were scored from outside the penalty area.
LouCity’s coaches and players, though, were disappointed to come out on the losing end, blaming the team’s second-half response.
“It was a clear issue with the mentality and the fragility of the group,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said. “And it needs to change because Louisville City is not a team that plays that way. We’re winners. And that attitude or mentality needs to change.”
Louisville City lost after scoring the opening goal a league game for the first time since Aug. 25, 2024, against Hartford Athletic, ending a string of 33 such games without defeat.
Louisville conceded an initial 3-0 halftime lead and second 4-3 advantage to lose in a game that saw both sides unleash three-goal scoring outbursts of less than ten minutes.
LouCity’s initial lead came on such a run. Louisville’s Jansen Wilson, Chris Donovan and Jake Morris scored in the 21st, 25th and 29th minutes respectively, giving Louisville a commanding lead in an eight-minute span.
But as quickly as LouCity built the lead — quick even — Tampa Bay overcame it.
“We want to win championships. That’s not how we control a game. This club has a history of being winners, and we did not show that tonight,” Morris said. “We did not make our fans proud tonight. We didn’t do the work that we needed to do to get the three points with a 3-0 up at halftime — 45 minutes of work, we didn’t do it.”
The hosts came out of the halftime break flying, scoring three goals in the space of six minutes. Russell Cicerone, Marco Micaletto and M.D. Myers scored in the 48th, 51st and 54th minutes to erase the deficit.
Morris scored his second goal of the night — both coming from long distance — in the 63rd minute to give LouCity a second lead, but it did not last.
Cicerone and Myers each scored their second goals of the night, in the 86th and 89th minutes respectively, to give the Rowdies their first come-from-behind win of the season.
“Things like that can’t happen at this level,” Wilson said. “We have them 3-0 down, but the game slipped away and we let ourselves down, let the club down, let the fans down, and it’s just not good enough.”
The game was broadcast nationally on ESPN2. It marked the sixth LouCity game selected for national broadcast this season and the second on an ESPN network.
With the loss, LouCity (8-7-3, 27 points) remains in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. LouCity lost ground on the tree teams ahead of it in the standings Saturday, with Tampa Bay and the Charleston Battery winning, while Detroit City FC earned a point with a tie.
LouCity is 11 points back of Tampa Bay for the Eastern Conference and overall league lead.
“We didn’t do what was needed, our jobs. So we need to look at that and we need to be better at that,” Bird said. “But quite honestly, I’m sick of saying it, so something has to change.”
