With contributions from Louisville City FC defender Josh Wynder and former LouCity star Jonathan Gomez, the United States’ youth national team advanced out of the group stage and to knockout play in the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.
The red white and blue went 3-0 in their group, a first for the U.S. in 17 appearances at this tournament.
Gomez scored the stoppage time game winner and Wynder contributed to a clean sheet May 20 as the Americans defeated Ecuador, 1-0, in their opener. Gomez started again Tuesday as the U.S. defeated Fiji, 3-0, and both players appeared Friday in a 2-0 victory over Slovakia.
With the World Cup narrowed to 16 remaining teams, the Group B-winning USA plays New Zealand, Group A’s third-place finisher, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Coverage will air live on Fox Sports 2 and Telemundo.
Should the U.S. continue advancing, its quarterfinal would take place on Sunday, the semifinal on June 8 and final on June 11. There’s also a third-place game on June 11.
