Kyle Greig had set a date — with agent, his family and himself. If he didn’t have work playing professional soccer by July 5, he’d consider himself retired.
As fate would have it, two days after making that pledge, Greig heard from a Louisville City FC side in need to depth at center forward. About a week after that, Greig was in town training with the boys in purple.
And on debut, Greig subbed in to score a flicked on, game-winning goal in front of 7,652 fans at Lynn Family Stadium. So it’s no wonder the hosts of the USL Championship podcast “Steele Some Time” wanted to do just that with LouCity’s latest edition.
“I’m a spiritual man,” Greig said. “It’s hard, as a man, to not want to control everything. I think for me, just being able to lift that up to God and put my trust in him just sort of (snowballed) this whole thing.
“To really give it up was a big moment for us to say hey, take it or leave it. If I have a team by July 5, great. But if not, I have to be fine moving on from the game, because it wasn’t fair to my wife and kids.”
