The excitement surrounding Monday night’s USL Cup Final between Louisville City FC and Swope Park Rangers has literally turned Louisville purple over the past few days.
From the official USL Cup Final press conference at the iconic Muhammad Ali Center on Friday and the fun of the Fan Rally in Fourth Street following soon after on Friday evening to the scarves that have appeared on statues across the city and purple lighting seen on downtown buildings and the Big 4 (walking) Bridge, the anticipation for Monday night’s big kickoff at a grass-filled Slugger Field has reached an all-time high.
“Scarfing”, the phenomenon that sees team colors placed on statues and places of special interest has been popping up across the metro area and LouCity scarves can now be seen adorning the city’s sporting legends such as Johnny Unitas, Paul Hornung, and Pee-Wee Reese. Churchill Downs played host to a visit from the USL Cup on Saturday, and the famous Twin Spires have been lit purple in support of the home team and special light projections promoting the big match have been spotted around Downtown throughout the weekend.
Ticket sales for Monday night’s match-up have been particularly strong, despite the 9 p.m. kick-off to accommodate a coast-to-coast national broadcast on ESPNU, as the City of Louisville and supporters of LouCity have rallied behind the club playing in the first professional championship in the city since 1975. Limited standing room tickets around the Overlook Deck are still available; Regular capacity at Slugger Field is approx. 13,300 including 11,800 seats.
