Louisville City FC has joined the effort to provide less fortunate children in the community a brighter holiday season through Toys for Tots.
Starting Wednesday, the LouCity Team Store will serve as a drop-off location for new, unwrapped toys for kids of all ages to be distributed as gifts and provide a message of hope.
The team store is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekdays at 125 S. 6th Street, with parking available on the side of the building.
Those who drop off are eligible for $5 off a purchase of LouCity gear and will receive a voucher for $5 off at Over the 9, the 10th street tavern that will also have a Toys for Tots drop-off box. LouCity’s merchandise discount will be in addition to price cuts already provided to season ticket holders and other ongoing sales.
The soccer club’s radio partner, iHeartMedia, will broadcast AM 790 WKRD’s “Afternoon Underdogs” sports talk show at the Team Store from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, and Monday, Dec. 12, to promote it as a Toys for Tots drive location.
On Dec. 6, LouCity assistant coach Daniel Byrd and midfielder Niall McCabe will be on hand to take pictures and sign autographs. Other members of the club may appear on Dec. 12 as well.
Operated as a non-profit by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots has since 1947 distributed tens of millions of toys valued at hundreds of millions of dollars.
According to the organization’s website, it aims “to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.”
Toys for Tots drop-off boxes will remain at the team store and Over the 9 through Dec. 12. The Louisville chapter of Toys for Tots has published a Frequently Asked Questions page with more information on how to donate.
