With starting goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh away this week on international duty, Louisville City FC coach James O’Connor has called upon a familiar face to fill out his lineup card.
Fan favorite Scott Goodwin, who enrolled this semester at Harvard Medical School, will reunite with team for Saturday’s road game against FC Montreal, briefly coming out of retirement to assist the club.
“We are obviously delighted that Scott has been able to join us for the weekend,” O’Connor said. “He is and always will be a valued member of the Louisville City family.”
Ranjitsingh left Louisville on Sunday for Trinidad and Tobago, his father’s native country, after made LouCity’s first full international call up by the Caribbean nation. He’ll be active for 2018 World Cup qualifiers set for Friday (against Guatemala) and Sept. 6 (against the United States).
O’Connor, meanwhile, has both Goodwin and rookie Tim Dobrowolski to consider between the posts Saturday. FC Montreal sits at the bottom of the USL’s Eastern Conference table after struggling to open the season but has won its last four games, most recently posting a 4-3 victory over rival Toronto FC II.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
“Things have been terrific at Harvard, and I’m loving every minute so far,” Goodwin said. “But I’m very excited to have the opportunity to join the guys again this weekend. This team is beyond special to me, and I look forward to doing whatever I can to help the team battle for a win in Montreal.”
A product of his home-state University of North Carolina, Goodwin signed with LouCity in 2015. His goals-against average ranked second-best in the USL, and he started 30 games across all competitions.
This year, Goodwin opened the season in goal before yielding to Ranjitsingh once sent off in LouCity’s 2-2 draw April 27 against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. He announced intentions to attend Harvard in May and went out in style in what was intended to be his final game, making three saves down the stretch of a 2-0 win July 4 over Montreal.
