New York Red Bulls II have a pair of games in hand, but Louisville City FC has already earned points enough to sit four in front at the midpoint of the United Soccer League season.
Because of that, the league’s Nicholas Murray again assigned the top spot in his weekly USL power rankings to LouCity on Monday with the club on a 14-match unbeaten streak.
Murray reasoned that “it is typically better to have points in the pocket than to be relying on future performances. As it was, Louisville’s two performances this week were both good ones, and the side could easily have given itself a good chance to beat Cincinnati on Saturday if not for an excellent performance by Mitch Hildebrandt and the FCC defense in the first half at Slugger Field.”
LouCity played rival Cincinnati to a scoreless draw Saturday in front of a club record 10,062 fans after notching a 4-1 victory over Toronto FC II in a midweek contest.
Louisville is 10-1-5 overall, its only defeat to Red Bulls II on April 2. The unbeaten streak is the longest in the league, but the teams chasing LouCity in both the Eastern Conference standings and power rankings also sport solid form.
Red Bulls II haven’t lost since May 1 (eight straight games) and FC Cincinnati since April 16 (10 straight games).
