Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
The Toros were the first of this group of expansion clubs to join the league, announcing their intentions to join USL on July 15, 2015. Alonzo Cantu, owner of the NBA Developmental League team Rio Grande Valley Vipers, is the owner of the new franchise.
“The USL is proud and excited to welcome RGVFC to our league,” USL CEO Alec Papadakis said. “We have great confidence in Alonzo Cantu, who has a proven track record in business and professional sports in the Rio Grande Valley. This vibrant economic market with a population of 1.3 million enjoys a long tradition in soccer. RGVFC is a first-class sports organization that will treat the passionate south Texas soccer fans to a state-of-the-art 9,400-seat soccer-specific stadium – now under construction – which surely will become a source of pride for the region.”
RGVFC has formed an official partnership with Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo, which is not a foreign concept to Cantu in his experience as a professional sports team’s owner. His Vipers formed a relationship with the NBA’s Houston Rockets and trail-blazed the concept of hybrid partnership in America’s professional basketball system.
Wilmer Cabrera, who last coached Chivas USA in the MLS, will coach RGVFC. The club will play its matches at a stadium currently being built in Edinburg, Texas. They will begin play in the 2016 season as part of the USL’s Western Conference.
