LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In December, Louisville City FC announced most of the Eastern Conference finalist’s backline would return after a 2015 season with the second best goal differential in the league, at plus-21. Tuesday, the club announced it bolstered its defense with the signing of former Colorado Rapids defender Ben Newnam.
“I am very excited to be joining Louisville City,” Newnam said. “It is an honor to work with a team that is led by coach (James) O’Connor and his outstanding staff. The club’s aspirations fit with mine and I am enthusiastic about the tremendous support the team gets from its fans.”
The 24-year-old Newnam — a USL veteran — played in 54 matches and smashed in four goals with the Charlotte Eagles from 2013-2014. While teammates with current Louisville City midfielder, Juan Guzman, Newnam played a critical role in helping Charlotte reach the USL Final in 2013. They fell to an Orlando City team that featured current LouCity coach James O’Connor.
“I have been aware of Ben for a few years now as he played against me in that Championship final in 2013,” O’Connor said. “He can play a number of positions, has good receiving skills and is technically sound. We are excited to have him here and I look forward to working with him.”
Following two successful seasons with the Eagles, the Kernersville, N.C., native attracted the attention of Major League Soccer. He was signed by Colorado Rapids in 2014, where he made his debut April 29, 2015, versus the New York Red Bulls. Newnam started and played all 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
It would be his only appearance before being sent on-loan to Charlotte Independence. After 11 games with the Independence, the versatile defender was sent to Pittsburgh where he finished out the 2015 season.
Before signing a professional contract, Newnam played four years at Wake Forrest University, while featuring for PDL-sides Reading United and the Carolina Dynamo.
Newnam is the 19th player on Louisville City’s 2016 roster and is the fourth addition to O’Connor’s roster. Fifteen members of the historic 2015 team will return for the Club’s second season.
