Playoff soccer is coming to Louisville’s Lynn Family Stadium.
A pair of second-half goals pushed Louisville City FC to a 2-0 win over Sporting Club Jacksonville on Wednesday night at Hodges Stadium in Florida.
The win guarantees a fourth-place finish in the Eastern Conference for LouCity (13-9-7, 46 points), earning a home playoff game at Lynn Family Stadium in next week’s opening round of the USL Championship Playoffs.
LouCity’s home game in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal round will take place Friday, Oct. 30, at Lynn Family Stadium, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m.
Tickets will go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m. Season ticket members can check their inboxes to get 25% off their regular seats. For more information, visit LouCity.com/playoffs.
“The support that we get (at home) really helps us through games when times are hard, when things are going well, whatever it is, that when we’ve got the crowd behind us and they’re on our side and cheering us on, it just gives us that extra, extra bit of belief, an extra bit of energy,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said following the win. “So we’re looking forward to playing at home and we’re excited that we get to do it in front of our fans.”
Wednesday’s victory is LouCity’s fourth straight in all competitions. LouCity is now unbeaten in its last six games, dating back to a loss on Sept. 19.
An own goal from Jacksonville’s Emil Jääskeläinen in the 77th minute was the difference, while LouCity’s Zach Duncan cemented the win with a goal in the 85th minute.
Jääskeläinen, a Finnish midfielder, headed the ball into his own net while defending a LouCity corner kick, delivered by Taylor Davila. LouCity’s Kevon Lambert was the target, but the ball missed Lambert and instead found Jääskeläinen, who redirected it past Jake McGuire.
“It’s tough. I wish I could claim it so Taylor could get the assist, but I can’t,” Lambert said of the goal — Davila’s service narrowly missed his head. “I mean, if he had put it a couple more inches aimed for me, then I probably could have gotten it.”
Duncan’s goal was a clean-up effort, after a shot from Louisville’s Quenzi Huerman forced a save from McGuire. The rebound fell to Duncan, who guided it beyond McGuire with his left foot.
“Yeah, it’s always nice to get on the score sheet,” Duncan said of his goal. “You know, it’s not the goal to come on and score, but (I was) just trying to do anything I can to help the team win, and I just ended up in the right place, right time.”
It was Duncan’s third goal of the season and first since June 11 in a win at Phoenix Rising FC.
The game was scoreless and uneventful for the first hour-plus, but LouCity had the better of it on the stat sheet. Overall, the boys in purple tallied 12 shots including five on target, earning 52.7% of the possession and nine corner kicks.
“(It) wasn’t really our maybe best performance, but we grounded out,” Bird said. “We wore on them and eventually got the goal that I thought we deserved, and obviously the second goal sealed it.”
Defensively, it was another clinical showing from Louisville, which earned its third clean sheet in the last four games. The showing was led by the backline of Kevon Lambert, Aiden McFadden, Kyle Adams, Amadou Dia and Manny Perez. The quintet combined for 25 clearances and six tackles.
The team limited Sporting JAX to just one shot on target, which was saved by LouCity goalkeeper Ryan Schewe, and eight shots total.
“The communication and the collectiveness of the slide and the drop and the step has been massive,” Duncan said of his team’s defensive form. “It’s not just about the fact that it’s the clean sheets. It’s also the way (the backline) win the ball. They put the ball in positions for us midfielders to, you know, to act on the next one. They’re just doing a really good job right now.”
LouCity will finish out the regular season with a playoff rematch against Detroit City FC, the team that eliminated the boys in purple from last year’s USL Championship Playoffs. That game will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium.
