Jansen Wilson and Mukwelle Akale scored second-half goals, while Kevon Lambert put in a masterful defensive performance, as LouCity defeated the Charleston Battery 2-0 on Saturday in South Carolina.
With Loudoun United FC defeating Miami FC elsewhere Saturday, LouCity (11-9-7, 40 points) clinched a berth in the 2026 USL Championship Playoffs with the win.
LouCity has now clinched a playoff berth for the 12th time in 12 seasons, the longest active playoff streak in the USL Championship.
The club will release ticketing details for potential home playoff games on Sunday.
“It was a good win. (I) thought we defended really well, defended the box well again,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said. Bird spoke to media before LouCity had clinched. “We’re happy with three points, and then we move on. Our mind is already on Indy next week, and we keep rolling.”
Wilson, LouCity’s leading scorer, unleashed a blast in the 51st minute, taking one touch to set up his right foot for a strike that found the top corner from the edge of the Charleston penalty area.
It was his 13th goal of the season in all competitions and eighth in league play — both tops for LouCity. It was his first goal since August 1, ending a 10-game drought.
The 25-year-old Kentuckian — Wilson is from Elizabethtown, just outside Louisville — had been quiet up until that moment. He had made just 23 touches when he scored, third-fewest among starters.
But when he had his moment, he made it count — and it counted big for LouCity as the winning margin in a vital late-season win.
“The ball fell in front of me, and the only thought I had was to smack it,” Wilson said. “So, (I’m) glad it went on target, glad it went in the goal.”
From there it took dogged defending, led once again by Kevon Lambert, and individual attacking brilliance from Akale — plus a little luck — for LouCity to see the win out.
After a shoddy clearance from Charleston, Akale picked up the ball around 30 yards from goal. The 29-year-old dribbled into the penalty area and put on a series of step-overs before his left-footed strike caught Charleston’s goalkeeper Luiz Zamudio flat-footed in the 88th minute.
It was Akale’s fourth goal of the season, all coming in league play, and first since Aug. 9.
“I’ve just been in this situation so many times that your instinct takes over, and that’s what happened there,” Akale said. “I can’t tell you how I did it.”
Lambert once again led LouCity defensively, tallying a game-high 17 clearances, equaling his impressive mark from last week’s Prinx Tires USL Cup Final. That total is the second-most in a USL-sanctioned game on record for the club.
In addition to his clearances, Lambert won two of his three tackles and registered two interceptions, all team highs. Lambert’s defensive presence was biggest in the 85th minute with a block of Charleston’s Emilio Ycaza, denying the midfielder from inside LouCity’s six-yard box.
“He’s a player that we rely on heavily, whether he’s playing centrally or whether he’s playing at the back,” Bird said of Lambert, who typically lines up centrally in the midfield. “His ability to, obviously, win aerial duels and his ability to command whichever area of the field he’s playing, is excellent. He again showed a real determination at the back and it was a massive performance from him and the whole back line.”
It was just the second home loss of the season for Charleston in all competitions, and it evened the season series between the two Eastern Conference rivals following a 2-0 Charleston win in Louisville back in April.
Statistically, the game was evenly played. LouCity edged Charleston ever-so-slightly in the shooting categories, 11 to 10 overall and 3 to 2 in terms of shots on target.
From here, LouCity returns home on Saturday for a rivalry bout with Indy Eleven on Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium.
The game will be Pink Night as LouCity — in partnership with UofL Health — raises breast cancer awareness and recognizes members of the community impacted by the disease.
