Ray Serrano scored twice, Chris Donovan added a third, and Louisville City FC survived a late Orange County SC rally to win 3-2 at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday night.
The win was LouCity’s best of the regular season thus far, in terms of opponent standing. Orange County (9-4-7, 34 points) came in to the game leading the USL Championship’s Western Conference in the Players’ Shield race behind the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
It puts LouCity (9-7-4, 31 points) just two points back of second place in the Eastern Conference, albeit the boys in purple remain 13 points back of the league-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies — a club that looks to be running away with the Players’ Shield, ending LouCity’s two-year run of winning the regular season crown.
“The ceiling is so much higher than what we’re showing now, but we’re making good strides,” LouCity interim head coach Simon Bird said. “But that’s the sign of a good team. We got the win and had a really good week, but we’re not satisfied one bit. We know we’ve got a lot more to come.”
Serrano struck in the sixth and 48th minutes — opening both halves with an early goal — for his first LouCity brace. The 24-year-old has is in his fifth season with the club.
“I’m happy to provide for the team. It’s most important,” Serrano said. “We talked about coming in here and getting three points, and I’m just glad I contributed to the team and helped them get three points.”
Chris Donovan came off the bench to give LouCity a 3-0 lead in the 68th minute, finishing off a team move so fluid it would be worthy of study in a coaching clinic.
From there, though, LouCity needed to hang on, and it did.
Orange County stormed back with goal from their join leading scorers — Ousmane Sylla in the 70th and Yaniv Bazini in the 78th, the latter from the penalty spot — but the hosts could not create an equalizer despite repeated deliveries into the Louisville box late on.
“I’m really, really proud that we hung on there the last eight or nine minutes over time and kind of dug our heels in — blocked shots, blocked crosses and did what we had to do to win the game,” Bird said. “So (I’m) really proud of that because, as we’ve talked about before, we could have easily crumbled there at the end.”
Bird heavily rotated his team Saturday, following a cross-country trip on short rest, making seven changes to the lineup. LouCity just played on Wednesday night in St. Petersburg, Fla., in a Prinx Tires USL Cup quarterfinal, where the boys in purple advanced past the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a penalty shootout following a 0-0 draw.
Serrano was one of those seven changes, as was Quenzi Huerman, who finished with two assists on the night — setting up Serrano’s second goal as well as Donovan’s tally. Those contributions marked the most important in purple yet for the Frenchman, who signed from Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the off-season.
“(This season) hasn’t been always easy individually, but it’s all about being ready and keeping my head down and being ready when my name is called up and being ready for the opportunity,” Huerman said. “So (I’m) happy to just help the team and get on the score sheet.”
A third year professional, Huerman had never tallied more than two assists in a season in his career to this point, much less two assists in the same game.
The victory caps an important, and successful, week for Louisville. In the span of eight days — Saturday, Aug. 8 to Saturday, Aug. 16 — LouCity faced each of the top three teams in the USL Championship standings. LouCity went unbeaten in those three games, including draws versus San Antonio FC and at Tampa Bay in the Prinx Tires USL Cup — LouCity knocked the Rowdies out of the tournament in a penalty shootout following the 0-0 tie — followed by Saturday’s win at Orange County.
“We have the right pieces. It’s all about putting it all together and making sure we stay ready as a group,” Huerman said. “I always say, and I know this club has been used to winning the (Players’) Shield, and obviously I want to win it myself, but I always say it’s better to peak towards the end of the season. And I think right now is a really good time for us to peak.”
LouCity will return home Sunday, completing a nearly 5,000-mile road trip — but it won’t be for long. Next week, LouCity will take a bus trip north on I-65 to face rival Indy Eleven at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22.
