Louisville City FC will welcome LaLiga’s CD Leganés to Lynn Family Stadium at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 12, for the club’s first-ever international friendly against Spanish competition.
Leganés is based in the Community of Madrid, just outside the Spanish capital city. Nicknamed Los Pepineros — or the Cucumber Growers, in honor of the city’s agricultural history — Leganés is playing the 2024-2025 season in Spain’s top tier after claiming a second division title last year.
Single game tickets for this summer’s friendly are on sale now by clicking below, via SeatGeek or by calling (502) LOU-CITY. Season ticket members’ seats are on reserve, and STMs will receive an email detailing how to claim their regular tickets.
This exhibition adds to a summer calendar for LouCity that also includes a Tuesday, July 29, matchup with Eintracht Frankfurt from the German Bundesliga.
“We are honored to host CD Leganés for our fifth international friendly — this one against a new European opponent for us,” said LouCity’s president, James O’Connor. “Over the last few seasons, we’ve been thrilled to host exciting friendlies with German clubs Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Kaiserslautern, and now we are proud to showcase another historic European club, this time from Spain. We hope our fans will take the opportunity to join us at Lynn Family Stadium to be part of a memorable night.”
Founded in 1928, Club Deportivo Leganés S.A.D. has spent five of its last nine seasons in the top flight of Spanish soccer having earned its first promotion to LaLiga in 2016. Leganés finished as high as 13th in 2019 and made it to at least the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey — Spain’s annual knockout competition, similar to the U.S. Open Cup — in both 2018 and 2025.
Led by 40-year-old Spanish manager Borja Jiménez, the team features an array of talent from 10 different countries. That includes Dani Raba, a former Europa League winner with Villarreal CF, and Spanish defender and club captain Sergio González. Raba contributed to 13 goals, leading Leganés to its 2024 league title, while González was the minutes leader.
Prominent former players at the club include four-time African Player of the Year Samuel Eto’o, 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist Diego Reyes and Danish striker Martin Braithwaite.
