RECAP: Stellar Lou City Shuts Out Ottawa in 3-0 Rout
Louisville City FC Brings Home Three Points in Dominating Performance in Ottawa
Total effort sees City down Ottawa on the road.
Louisville City FC commanded a 3-0 win on the road against eighth-ranked Ottawa Fury FC in its first shutout since June 9. City’s three-goal run saw player-coach Paolo DelPiccolo, Paco Craig and Devon “Speedy” Williams on the scoring sheet.
What Happened?
A mid-day kickoff saw the Boys in Purple take on Eastern Conference playoff contender Ottawa Fury FC in it’s fourth road game in the month of July. Though Louisville City’s 32 points entering the day were good for fourth in the conference, just five points separated City and eighth-ranked Ottawa.
Louisville City started the game testing the Fury FC backline but the hosts would refuse to concede. After five minutes of play, Ottawa had the first scoring opportunity but came up empty after the hosts’ free kick was halted by goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh. Just eight minutes later, Louisville City’s first set-piece proved useful when Oscar Jimenez’s corner found captain Paolo DelPiccolo in the box to open the match’s scoring.
With the one-nil lead heading into the break, City continued its pressure on the Ottawa defense and found themselves with another chance just two minutes into the half. Again, it was Oscar Jimenez’s set piece in the 47th minute that found defender Paco Craig after a series of deflections, doubling City’s lead.
More efforts from the Ottawa attack came up short-handed with City’s stingy backline unwilling to concede. Just ten minutes following the strike from Craig, it was Devon “Speedy” Williams who closed the scoring sheet for the Boys in Purple after an Ottawa defender’s attempt at a clearance fell at Williams’s feet and eventually found the back of the net.
Louisville City FC will head into August at second in the Eastern Conference standings. The club returns to action on Sunday, August 5 for a 5:00 p.m. ET kickoff at Slugger Field as they host Indy Eleven. Tickets are available for as low as $16 by calling (502) 384-8799, option 2, or online at www.loucity.com.
The Key Points:
- Greg Ranjitsingh’s 5th minute save prevented Ottawa from taking the early lead
- Oscar Jimenez displayed fantastic passing ability as he added two more assists to his season toal
- Player-coach Paolo DelPiccolo found the back of the net for the third time in 2018
- Defender Paco Craig used his size in the box off a set piece to tally his third goal on the season
- City’s stingy backline held the hosts scoreless for its first clean sheet since July 9
Luke Spencer’s post-Ottawa press conference
On if there is any concern regarding Alexis Souahy’s red card:
“Yeah, anytime you get a red card there’s a concern because you’re leaving your guys a man down. It’s been a focus of ours to be more disciplined. I think Alexis [Souahy] was a little unlucky for that, but at the same time we have to be above it.”
On the team’s discipline on the pitch late in the match:
“Ottawa made it difficult. They are a very direct, athletic team. But I thought our guys played really well and won a lot of their challenge, won a lot of balls and did a lot of unselfish work for each other.”
On any changes heading into the half before the quick strikes in the second 45 minutes:
“Just to keep going. I think at times when you score one goal and you come into halftime, you think your job is done. But for us it’s about sticking to it and pushing through it and two more goals came from it.”

A Club with Culture
As the “Boys in Purple” departed the pitch for the locker room at Slugger Field on Saturday night, the mood resembled frustration, bordering on anger. Seemingly odd, given that they’d just pulled off a much needed 4-1 victory over a playoff-contending Charlotte side. Those that only saw the score would not understand how a team coming off a 4-0 loss, playing with 15 rostered field players, and no true coaching staff, could be disappointed with this result.
Lou City had played well the entire match, opening the scoring in the 21st minute on a beautiful through ball from Ilija Ilic to Niall McCabe, who finished with ease. In the second half, the defense was impeccable as the visitors would manage only 5 touches in the penalty area during the match. Ilic finished from the spot in the 72nd minute after Brian Ownby was fouled in the area; Cameron Lancaster added his 10th goal of the season on a slotted ball from the top of the box in the 81st minute, assisted by Speedy Williams; And finally, George Davis IV received a delicate pass from Magnus Rasmussen and played a ball off the left foot in the 87th minute to put the home team up, 4-0.
The first 89 minutes were peaches and cream. It is what happened in the 90thminute, and more specifically the reaction that followed, that defines this team….and its culture. Charlotte’s Jorge Herrera scored on a picturesque shot to the top left corner, negating the clean sheet in a way that ends up on a highlight reel.
As the team reflected in the immediate aftermath of the 4-1 victory, there was no celebration. The focus was all on one small instance of complacency. After all, what if the score had been 1-0, or worse yet, 0-0?
Luke Spencer has been the public face of the famed “Triumvirate” since June 29th. That’s when James O’Connor, Lou City’s head coach since it’s inception, announced he and his staff were leaving for Orlando. The Triumvirate consists of three players (Luke Spencer, George Davis IV, and Paolo DelPiccolo) that have stepped up to coach their teammates while a replacement is hired.
Spencer’s words were not those of a coach enjoying a victory in his home debut.
“We have spoken at length about finishing games, and not allowing goals in the final minutes. We have to be better,” he said.
“We must finish with high intensity, this is not acceptable,” said Shaun Francis, as he clapped his hands in frustration.
There were no words from DelPiccolo, captain and co-head coach. A gritting of teeth and a tempered head shake was all that could be mustered.
This club is unique; it has a culture of impenetrable principles. During this coach-less stretch of three league games, all against playoff contenders—including two on the road—they have managed six points, but they are not satisfied. They have an unwavering desire to improve. They are never pleased with their performance but in a healthy way. That’s the culture that has been instilled over the last four years and that’s the culture that has allowed this team to improve its position in the standings during the greatest period of adversity in its history.
What will happen in Ottawa on Saturday? No one knows; that’s why they play the games. Life is not a fairy tale. In real life, if Cinderella loses a shoe at midnight, chances are she’s simply had too much to drink. But whatever happens, we know the lads will look to improve on the negative and capitalize on the positive. That’s why we’re proud.
When a permanent staff is named, these boys will return to normalcy and soak up everything the coaches have to offer. The top of the table is in our sightline. The future is bright.
C’mon City!

Louisville City FC put on an electrifying performance in their first match back home in nearly a month as they dismantled Charlotte Independence 4-1, thanks to goals from four different players.
Niall McCabe saw the hosts cap off a dominant opening 20 minutes with a clinical finish, thanks to a chipped through ball from Ilija Ilic, and “the boys in purple” went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
The floodgates opened up in the second half, beginning with a 72nd-minute penalty from Ilic. Less than 10 minutes later, substitute Cameron Lancaster was slipped through by Speedy Williams, and the striker slotted it home to make the lead 3-0 to LouCity.
In the 86th minute, City made it four, as in George Davis IV. Magnus Rasmussen whipped a ball across the box, and it found its way through three Independence defenders before hitting the boot of Davis, who rocketed it past the keeper.
Charlotte would get a consolation goal in stoppage time, but the damage was done and LouCity took home all three points.
– BRAD ESTES TO BE APPOINTED LOUISVILLE CITY FC TEAM PRESIDENT –
Rewind against Ottawa Fury FC
This is the first time these two teams have met in the 2018 USL campaign. Ottawa will visit Louisville Slugger Field on September 22 for the reverse fixture.
George Davis IV’s pre-match press conference:
On how it feels to get back to winning:
“Yeah, it feels good. It’s something we needed. Team confidence is always a big factor when you’re going into a game. So, to go to put four goals in the net and get a W and three two points, yeah it feels great.”
On Ottawa this weekend:
“Yeah Ottawa will be very athletic, very strong team. They seem to be finding their way in the last couple of weeks, so playing on the turf up in Canada, it’s going to be another tough match and can’t overlook the opponent. But, you know, we’ll spend another week preparing just like we always do, and hopefully go up there to put in another good performance.”
On if there’s more freedom in the team now:
“It’s hard to tell. I mean, there’s definitely a sense of freedom now in the locker room, but we have to manage that, and we have to maintain a balance that we stay on track with what is important. You know, our mentality stays the same. Again, our focus and our concentration are maintained, but yeah there may be a bit more freedom and we just have to use that in a positive way and not let it be a negative for us.”
On how the player-coaches have adjusted a month into the job:
“The managing of the time has been a big thing. Dealing with players as far as trying to maintain good relationships and make sure the vibes in the locker room are high and all the players are able to voice their opinions and maintain a sense of structure as well. But I think it’s been very good. I think the team has responded well. I think me, Luke and Paolo are learning and managing day by day. So, we’re enjoying it. We’re embracing it. We’re trying to keep it going to continue to win because that’s what’s most important to us.”
On the different roles of the player-coaches:
“Well, I think our roles are different because we’re all different personalities. With Luke’s injury right now, and him coming back, he’s been able to be more of a presence as far as watching from the outside. With Paolo being a captain and on the field, and myself being on the field, it forces us into different roles. But I think it’s something that we’ve managed well. The players respond to us differently. What I say to a player may be taken differently than what Paolo says to a player and the same with Luke. But that’s why it’s important for us to manage those things and make sure our message is consistent, and I think we’ve done a pretty good job.”

Coaching City: Team focuses on style, discipline
In a little over a month, Luke Spencer, Paolo DelPiccolo and George Davis IV have gone from professional soccer players to players, coaches, team leaders, and media figureheads.
The change has been one which no player expects when he signs his professional contract, but the triumvirate has handled it with aplomb. LouCity has won two of three matches with the new leadership, including an electrifying 4-1 victory Saturday in their first home match in charge.
Since the player-coaches were appointed, the team has played with noticeably more fluid, with players overlapping and exchanging intricate passes to create moments of magic like the 8,006 fans at rainy Louisville Slugger Field saw time and time again against Charlotte.
“There’s definitely a sense of freedom now in the locker room,” George Davis IV said Monday, “but we have to manage that, and we have to maintain a balance that we stay on track with what is important. Our mentality stays the same. Again, our focus and our concentration are maintained, but yeah there may be a bit more freedom.”
Even though the “Boys in Purple” are playing with a newfound liberation, they’ve tried to maintain a focus on discipline. After three red cards in two matches, Luke Spencer made a point emphasize discipline in the locker room.
“We’re leaving each other out there a man down,” Spencer said. “Two men down, and we can’t do that. It’s hard enough playing 11v11. We have to have more respect for each other and stay disciplined.”
That message resonated with the entire team, and LouCity committed just seven fouls throughout the match, were caught offsides just one time, and not a single player registered a booking.
“Sometimes you got to learn the hard lessons,” Spencer said, “and I think Charleston and Chicago were good lessons for us. We took a lot of weight in those two games, even though we lost them. We learned from them, they allowed us to improve from those games. The guys took that message on board, and it showed in the result.”
RECAP: City stuns Charlotte in attacking thriller
Louisville City FC battered the Charlotte Independence, 4-1, on a rainy night at Slugger Field for the team’s first win at home since beating Atlanta United near the end of May. City’s four-goal run saw Niall McCabe, Ilija Ilic, Cameron Lancaster, and George Davis IV all add to their tallies on the season.
What Happened?
An overcast night soon saw rain began to pour as goals poured in for City’s first match at Slugger Field since the departure of coaches James O’Connor, Daniel Byrd, and Thabane Sutu at the end of June. Both sides came into the match having played midweek, leaving little time to rest and recover ahead of Saturday’s session.
City started hot and looked the better of the two teams from the beginning, testing Charlotte and ‘keeper Brandon Miller multiple times in the early goings. Knocking on the door time and time again, City eventually broke the Independence down in the 21st minute on a goal from Niall McCabe. Forward Ilija Ilic, who started in place of Cameron Lancaster, threaded a pass through for McCabe, who produced a calm finish to put his side one-up.
Taking the lead into the halftime break, City came back out still the aggressors and added a second goal in the 72nd minute after Ilija Ilic converted from the penalty spot. As Charlotte continued to wear down, City would pile on another pair from Cameron Lancaster and George Davis IV to put the hosts firmly in front.
With nothing left in the match, the Independence would find one goal late from leading scorer Jorge Herrera but it would only put a dent in the damage done by City, who scored four goals in a league match for the first time all year.
Louisville City FC will head into a full week of rest before traveling to Ottawa to face Fury FC at 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 28. After that, City returns to Louisville to host Indy Eleven on Sunday, August 5, with kickoff set for 5:00 p.m. ET at Slugger Field. Tickets are available for as low as $16 by calling (502) 384-8799, option 2, or online at www.loucity.com.
The Key Points:
- Midfielder Niall McCabe opened the scoring after 21 minutes off an Ilija Ilic pass
- Ilic turned provider to goalscorer with a converted penalty in the 72nd minute
- Cameron Lancaster added City’s third for his 10th of the season
- George Davis IV rounded out the show with the team’s fourth goal of the night
- Charlotte’s consolation on the night came from Jorge Herrera in stoppage time
Luke Spencer’s post-Charlotte press conference
On how it feels to be home:
“Yeah it feels really good to come back home in front of our fans after two losses that didn’t go the way we had planned, it feels really good to get back on the field.”
On how the team how’s played as of late:
“There’s a lot more freedom now. James [O’Connor] is a great coach but he likes things specific ways. What we try to do here is give structure and allow us to go out there and express ourselves. Especially on a night like tonight when it’s wet, there’s some good attacking play but we really need to get the shots off.”
On the strong mentality and ability to bounce back after disappointing losses:
“To go through this situation with a coaching change – you’re away at Tampa, you’re away at Charleston, you’re away at Chicago – those were three tough games in a tough situation. We kept that perspective and we know our capabilities so we really just talked about the belief in each other. We know we’re good players and it showed tonight.”
On the need for a home game:
“It was needed. It was good to get back here and hear our fans and be on familiar soil.”
On the cruciality of the next six days approaching a tough stretch of games:
“Yeah, it’s key. We’re going to harp on the rest and recovery piece definitely but then Tuesday when training rolls around, it’s back to work and we’re focused on Ottawa.”
On what point in the game they felt they were ready to open the game up:
“From the start of the game, we wanted to take it to them with our intensity. I thought the guys did that with our pressure. Over the course of the game, we saw the pressure was causing turnovers and we were able to get some success from that. It was just a matter of keeping the ball and knocking on the door.”
On the different-looking lineup with Oscar Jimenez out:
“Well Oscar [Jimenez] didn’t give us a choice, so we had to make some changes and I thought Frano [Shaun Francis] was brilliant today. It just gave us a different look out there and it led the guys to a win.”
On if he has looked at the Eastern Conference standings and the race towards the playoffs:
“Honestly I haven’t. I know it’s close, but if we take care what we’re supposed to, it will take care of itself.”

Louisville City FC bowed out of the 2018 U.S. Open Cup after a 4-0 loss to the Chicago Fire in the competition’s Quarterfinals at Toyota Park on Wednesday. The match was the first in which City conceded four goals all season in any competition as the team’s focus shifts back to USL play this weekend.

Rewind against Charlotte Independence
This will be the first meeting between LouCity and the Charlotte Independence this season.
City has a good history at home against the Independence, winning three out of four past meetings at Slugger Field. The pair last met on October 7 in Louisville when City claimed a 2-1 win heading into the final week of the regular season.
KY Lottery Kees to the Game
As LouCity’s attention turns back to USL play for the remainder of the season, here are the KY Lottery Kees to the Game for #LOUvCLT:
- Cut off the feed to Herrera
- Play through the middle
- Keep the energy high
With Oscar Jimenez suspended this weekend, City will have to rely on the bodies available to get the job done in another important test.
Luke Spencer’s pre-match press conference
On the shift back to USL play:
“We have to get back to respecting each other, being disciplined, listening to one another, and going out there and applying the things we think will work. It starts right now in responding from that. We’re looking to get back onto the training pitch.”
On if the Open Cup run is bittersweet:
“We would’ve liked to win it! Anytime you lose, it hurts. Any time you don’t achieve a goal, it hurts. But we have to look back at it and learn from it. That’s what we’re going to try to do and just apply those lessons moving forward.”
On the team’s need to emphasize discipline:
“Apparently a lot more. It’s something that we had spoken about but we have to clean it up and also just have more respect for each other. We’re leaving each other out there a man down, two men down, and we can’t do that. It’s hard enough playing 11v11. We have to have more respect for each other and stay disciplined.”
On using passion to drive forward:
“We still have goals in front of us, especially when it comes to the table. The Open Cup is difficult because if you lose, you’re out. Now we’re out, but it clears some games off the schedule for us and we’ll be able to fully focus on the table.”
On his message to supporters:
“We greatly appreciate it. It’s nice to hear them in the stands. We certainly apologize for the discipline aspect but they have our word that we’ll clean that up.”
