Louisville City FC’s Ben Lundt didn’t make the most saves in the USL Championship’s 2020 regular season or record the most shutouts.

But when his side needed him most, Lundt came up with the key saves that earned LouCity the best record in the Eastern Conference and the second-year pro the honor of being named the league’s 2020 Goalkeeper of the Year.

“We are so proud of Ben and his growth as a player and person while here at LouCity,” coach John Hackworth said of Lundt, who’s on loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati. “He has matured both on and off the field. The work that goalkeepers coach Scott Budnick has done is impressive, while Ben’s peers, Chris Hubbard and Mu Ugarak, have pushed Ben all season. This individual recognition for Ben is fantastic, but it is a reflection of the collective work of our team.”

Appearing in all-but-one of Louisville’s regular season contests, the 25-year-old was a model of consistency throughout the season. His 74.4 save percentage was the second-highest in the Championship among goalkeepers who appeared in at least 14 games, while his 0.73 goals-against average and seven shutouts also placed him among the league leaders in both categories. 

But it was Lundt’s ability to produce the big save at key moments that saw the German shot-stopper stand out in a crowded field that produced a narrow margin of victory over other worthy contenders. He began the year in superb fashion with a highlight-reel save against North Carolina FC that led to a 1-0 victory. He ended the year in similar fashion against Saint Louis FC, again producing a key stop on the road in a 1-0 win in LouCity’s penultimate game of the season.

Lundt earned 36.8 percent of the ballot to claim the award, while the Charlotte Independence’s Brandon Miller finished second on 35.6 percent and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s Kyle Morton took third on 27.6 percent. 

Factoring in playoff stats, Lundt’s nine clean sheets put him atop the league. That includes a 10-save performance and early penalty stop in an Eastern Conference Semifinal victory over Saint Louis FC. One week later, the boys in purple appeared in their sixth straight Eastern Conference Final, a defeat to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

“While I’d trade the personal recognition for having won the Eastern Conference Final, I’m very honored to be named Goalkeeper of the Year from such a great group at the position this season,” Lundt said. “Thank you to my coaches, fellow goalkeepers and the whole team helping me strive to improve.”

The 2020 USL Championship Awards were voted on by team technical staffs and executives and a league-wide media panel that included representation from every USL Championship market. Voting was conducted following the conclusion of the 2020 Championship regular season.

Given the dream beyond his playing days, Luke Spencer said Saturday morning, there’s no better place to stay than within the Soccer Holdings, LLC, family.

The recently retired forward, who spent four years with the boys in purple, is moving to a full-time academy role, where he’ll be surrounded by personnel he’d like to emulate — coaches such as John Hackworth, Danny Cruz, James O’Connor and Mario Sanchez.

“That’s the end goal,” Spencer said on the Soccer City radio show, powered by Kentuckiana Toyota Dealers. “I want to be a professional coach. At what level, I don’t know yet.”

In addition to Spencer’s visit, host Lance McGarvey checked in with Racing Louisville FC coach Christy Holly, who’s wrapping up a busy week with an invitational training session, looking to build on the trade acquisitions of forwards Savannah McCaskill and Yuki Nagasato.

A quartet of Louisville City FC personnel — most of any within the 35-team league — was announced Thursday as USL Championship Award Finalists for the 2020 season as voted on by team management and a league-wide media panel that included representation from every USL market.

Most Valuable Player, Cameron Lancaster

Returning to LouCity on loan from Nashville SC in 2020, Lancaster, also a finalist for this award in 2018, was an offensive force all season. Lancaster led the Eastern Conference in goals scored with 12 – good for third in the league overall – and in the process reached 50 career goals in league play through just 111 appearances.

Coach of the Year, John Hackworth

Hackworth, in his second full season with the club, led LouCity to an impressive midseason turnaround with streaks that measured 13 games unbeaten and eight straight wins following a 1-3 record upon the USL restart in July. Hackworth guided LouCity to its sixth Eastern Conference Final appearance in as many years as a club.

Goalkeeper of the Year, Ben Lundt

Lundt was a wall for the boys in purple this season, recording a league-leading nine clean sheets while conceding only 13 goals. On loan from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati, Lundt pushed his save success rate to 77.2 percent by stopping 10 shots in an Eastern Conference Semifinal win over Saint Louis FC.

Defender of the Year, Sean Totsch

Continuing to be an anchor on LouCity’s backline, Totsch led the boys in purple in most every defensive category this season while starting in 17 of 19 games. During a 13-game unbeaten streak that lasted into the playoffs, LouCity didn’t concede more than a goal in a single game with Totsch in central defense.

With Louisville City FC’s 2020 season concluded, Luke Spencer has announced his retirement from playing professional soccer. It’s a bittersweet moment for the club, however, as the veteran forward takes on a new role.

Spencer will make the transition to working within LouCity’s youth academy as assistant boys director and college recruitment coordinator, a full-time position that builds upon his post established earlier this year as an academy coach.

“If you look at Lynn Family Stadium, the recently formed academy, the addition of Racing Louisville FC and the development of our new training facility, it is a very exciting time for the club and for the city of Louisville,” Spencer said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to remain part of the LouCity-Racing family, and I look forward to working with the staff and players in the youth academy.”

Spencer, 29, is hanging up his boots after four years in purple. He led the club’s first championship-winning team in scoring in 2017, was one of three player-coaches appointed amid a leadership transition in 2018 and netted the game-winning goal in that year’s final to secure a second title.

Having totaled 28 goals and 11 assists in his 104 USL Championship appearances with LouCity, Spencer will be remembered most for his playoff heroics. The Cincinnati product tallied a goal and two assists in the 2017 postseason before finding the back of the net in the 2018 final to cap a frenetic second half attacking sequence for the boys in purple.

“He has been an unbelievable player and leader for our team,” said LouCity coach John Hackworth. “While it’s sad to know we’ve seen him play for the last time, this is a smooth transition that keeps a great person in our community who has done everything for this club and deserves a ton of credit.”

Success in Spencer’s new role should come naturally, just as it did in 2018 when then-LouCity coach James O’Connor departed for Major League Soccer’s Orlando City SC. In the interim, before Hackworth was brought in to finish the campaign, Spencer along with midfielders Paolo DelPiccolo and George Davis IV ran the team as player-coaches coined the “triumvirate.”

Spencer arrived in Louisville with coaching experience, too, serving as an assistant at alma mater Xavier University. The 2012 MLS SuperDraft’s 23rd pick, Spencer never suited up for the New England Revolution due to a knee injury. He worked for Xavier — where he had racked up 29 goals to go with 21 assists — while healing up, then debuted as a pro with FC Cincinnati.

Once Spencer signed with LouCity for the 2017 season, his career took off, and he has since settled in Louisville. Spencer and his wife, Kristen, recently celebrated the birth of their first son, Emory.

“We are excited that Luke and his family have decided to stay in the LouCity organization as he begins the next step of his career,” said Mario Sanchez, youth academy director. “Throughout his time with LouCity, Luke has been a great ambassador for the club both on and off the field. I am thrilled that our academy players and our community will be able to learn and grow from his experience and expertise.”

The USL Championship on Wednesday revealed an All-League First Team consisting of four Louisville City FC players — most from any club to earn the recognition in a single season since the boys in purple began play in 2015.

Forward Cameron Lancaster, midfielder Devon “Speedy” Williams, defender Sean Totsch and goalkeeper Ben Lundt were each deemed to be among the league’s best 11 players as voted on by club management and a league-wide media panel that included representation from every USL market.

It has been since 2013 that the Richmond Kickers had as many as four All-League First Team selections. That season, 13 teams played in what was known as USL Pro. This year, 35 teams competed in the USL Championship.

“This All-League representation is another sign of how talented our players are as a whole,” said coach John Hackworth. “These four are each pleasure to work and huge reasons for our success this season.”

Lancaster, the 2018 Golden Boot winner from England, had another standout campaign in Louisville while on loan from Major League Soccer’s Nashville SC, totaling 12 goals. The striker was especially potent down the stretch, netting seven goals in as many LouCity victories as the club advanced to the Eastern Conference Final.

Williams, who leads the USL Championship with 1,161 passes made, served as the club’s self-proclaimed “engine” in the central midfield, distributing from defense to a potent attack. The Jamaican international also had a breakout season scoring with a career-high four goals, including a memorable first at the newly opened Lynn Family Stadium.

Totsch, who has won three USL titles, had arguably his best season yet in central defense. His 55 clearances were 16 more than anyone else on the roster, while the Illinois native also led LouCity in tackles/tackles won (41/29) and interceptions (31). Amid a 13-game unbeaten streak toward the end of the season, the club never conceded more than a goal in a game.

Lundt, another MLS loanee, this one from FC Cincinnati, was a force in goal for the boys in purple, leading the USL with nine clean sheets. He totaled 44 saves, 10 of them in a standout Eastern Conference Semifinal performance against Saint Louis FC that included an early penalty kick stop in his final shutout of the year.

Soccer Holdings, LLC, parent company of Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC, will on Thursday present the next edition of a speaker series at the recommendation of its Diversity, Opportunity and Inclusion Committee with an expert panel discussing “Race in Voting.”

This event is the second in a year-long, monthly series of panel discussions hosted by LouCity and Racing on a variety of subjects that examine race relations in the Louisville and sporting communities.

A digitally broadcast event, “Race in Voting” starts at 7 p.m. on both clubs’ social media channels and websites. It will also be archived for viewing later.

“Having experts in their fields educate our organization and our fan base is a great way for us to use our platforms for good,” said Soccer Holdings’ director of community engagement, Evan Floyd. “With the election coming up, we can’t think of a topic more relevant to our community.”

The “Race in Voting” panel will be made up of national and local experts including notable educators, writers and political figures who can shed light on how race has played a role in local and national politics.

This discussion will focus on the history of voter suppression, current polling statistics among minority groups and the importance of making your voice heard.

Panelists will address questions submitted by the Diversity, Opportunity and Inclusion Committee as well as topics suggested by the moderator before a question/answer segment to conclude the program. Attempts will be made to take questions from the online viewing audience.

The offseason has arrived a week too early for those accustomed to staging the USL Championship Final in Louisville, but we are here on the heels of Saturday’s 2-1 playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Before we get into the silly season of new signings and forecasting next year’s roster, we have to consider the Louisville City FC season we all just witnessed. Tactics aside, here are some of the biggest takeaways for me from the 2020 campaign.

The season happened at all

It is fair to say that we all won something when the USL implemented a return to play plan after the season went on an unscheduled hiatus. With the protocols established by the league, LouCity had zero positive tests for COVID-19 this season. None. This, under a plan that had games in home markets and with fans — not a bubble like the NBA or with the financial resources of the NFL. That may be the most remarkable accomplishment of the entire season. 

There were other changes to consider, too. With Louisville being a focal point for social unrest, players acknowledged and joined in solidarity of the movement. The front office likewise established its Diversity, Inclusion and Opportunity Committee. Together, they’re walking the walk.

Fans also became Honorary Owners when they put their faith in this club. Thousands were willing to forgo their season tickets in order to help this team. In the end, their faith was rewarded with a large slate of home games, and the club got to have some of its most loyal fans on hand for a special season. 

The team turned itself around

When Louisville City sat at the bottom of the table at the end of July, questions were starting to be asked. Things were not clicking on the pitch, for any number of reasons, and some seemed to write off the season.

This team did not. Throughout the struggle in form, the response remained the same: The team believed in itself and its ability. Players showed it in their eight-win, 13-game unbeaten game streak that followed. They dominated the likes of Indy Eleven and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and dispatched Saint Louis FC in an emotional final Kings’ Cup matchup. The boys in purple won their group, by far the trickiest collection of teams in the Eastern Conference. More than that, they amassed the most points in the East. There is not any hardware to show for it, but that should not be forgotten here. 

The way LouCity did it was impressive as well. Unfortunately, it was not possible to report on this team on a day-to-day basis as I have in the past, but it was easy to see and feel the steady hand on the wheel. John Hackworth is not the kind of coach to overreact or overcompensate, and he steadily added elements to this City team as the year went on, knowing that his team would come around. The trust between himself and the players is remarkable. 

Building the perfect home(s)

It certainly was not the inaugural season that anybody the new digs deserved, but consider the entire 2020 as a ‘cold open’ for Lynn Family Stadium, the home of LouCity and NWSL expansion franchise Racing Louisville FC. We had a taste of how loud it could potentially get and were left wanting more. Nobody knows if 2021 will kick off with a full crowd allowed in, but LouCity and Racing will be the hottest ticket in town when they are. 

Lynn Family Stadium is more than just a place to call our own, though. Lots of teams have bland, uncovered, prefabricated bleacher stadiums that could be situated anywhere. We have a thoughtfully designed stadium with roof, bespoke features, and a game day experience that will only get better with more fans in attendance. It is a part of the Louisville skyline now. On top of Racing and City games, the facility is already slated to host an NCAA College Cup, and concerts should follow that Louisville on the map as a soccer town. When the day comes that we can pack Lynn Family Stadium, the place will come alive, you can already see the signs of it. It already shakes during big moments for City, even at 30% capacity.

Beyond the stadium, the organization has another new place to call home. With both artificial and grass pitches for the first teams, plus the academy teams playing in the same place, a new training facility at Champions Park shows the solidification of lots of hard work from a dedicated group of people that will provide a pipeline of talent to the senior teams, and give a stage for kids playing soccer in the local area. It was a massive step forward and proves to everyone that this organization is not here to just field a team, not here just to sell tickets, not here to just give you an entertainment option on every other Saturday night. They are here to represent Louisville, and they’re putting down some deep roots in order to do that. 

More than ambition, expectation

Some say that LouCity fans are “spoiled” by the scale of the club’s success, I say they are “conditioned” to expect great things out of the organization. Semantics aside, the expectation on the part of the players was brought into sharp relief in the immediate scenes after the playoff loss on Saturday night. Some were moved to tears and some were contemplating the moment. But none were satisfied after making a sixth straight conference final.

“For us, the standard is not to end the season this weekend. The standard is to win the last game of the year, and we haven’t done that,” said midfielder and team captain Paolo DelPiccolo. “It hurts. It’s very disappointing. What can I say? It’s going to sting for a long time.”

That is the other side of the coin when your club has as much success as this one has earned. It is not a fluke that we are here, as from top to bottom the club leads the way in many aspects of the USL. Ultimately it is felt that failing to win the title is unacceptable by some.

It is not up to me to deem 2020 a success or failure, but the expectation is set from the ownership to the fanbase that this club wins. Although the boys in purple did not add a star to their crest, I still can feel good about the waves this team has made. 

And so that’s a wrap on 2020. I hope LouCity was a good escape for you during a turbulent year as it was for me. While there will certainly be some changes over the offseason, I hope we all take some good memories from this year. Next year will bring a new look, a new team, and a new challenge to get back to winning silverware. I can’t wait.

It wasn’t good enough.

Louisville City FC midfielder and multi-year captain Paolo DelPiccolo repeated it Saturday night after the air went out from Lynn Family Stadium in a 2-1, Eastern Conference Final loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

“My thoughts right now are disappointment,” DelPiccolo said. “For us, the standard is not to end the season this weekend. The standard is to win the last game of the year and we haven’t done that. It hurts. It’s very disappointing. What can I say? It’s going to sting for a long time.”

On Saturday, LouCity competed in its sixth Eastern Conference Final, advancing to the USL Championship’s national semifinal every year the club has existed. Three consecutive times before Saturday, the boys in purple advanced to the USL Championship Final, winning it in both 2017 and 2018. 

This team was on to something special in 2020 as well.

Having played just one game before the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to its season, LouCity hobbled to a 1-3 record upon the league’s restart in July. But the boys in purple didn’t stay down long, going from the bottom of their regionalized group standings to the top.

The streaks measured 13 games unbeaten with eight straight wins. That included seven clean sheets as LouCity out-scored opponents 27-6 after the calendar turned to August.

The club’s past, and the current precedent, had players believing they’d be hoisting an Eastern Conference trophy at the final whistle Saturday even after trailing 2-0 at half — the first deficit LouCity faced in 14 games.

“The thing about us is there’s not a minute where we don’t think that we’re going to have a chance and have belief to win this game,” DelPiccolo said.  “Until that final whistle blew, I thought we would win the game, we’d find a way to win the game.”

“Tonight, was not good enough from us,” DelPiccolo added. “People are going to pat us on the back and say, ‘Oh, you know, Eastern Conference Finals — that’s great, six years in a row.’ That’s not the standard around here.

“That’s not what (chairman) John Neace deserves. He built this stadium like this for us. He deserves another game in it. That’s not what we expect of each other. We expect to win, and we came up short.

“We take a lot of pride in the way that we work, but we work so that we’re playing for trophies,” echoed coach John Hackworth, who since coming to LouCity in 2018 has won a title in 2018 and revisited the league final in 2019. “The reality that this club has done since day one and when we don’t reach those goals, we feel that we weren’t successful. That’s the bottom line here.”

Louisville City FC’s season ended Saturday night the way campaigns do for most teams, but as of late, not for the boys in purple — with a loss.

A run of 13 games unbeaten, with eight straight wins, halted when the Tampa Bay Rowdies registered a 2-1 win at Lynn Family Stadium, taking the Eastern Conference Final and advancing to the Nov. 1 USL Championship Final.

The Rowdies scored at two inopportune times, first in the fourth minute to open things up and again in stoppage time just before the halftime whistle. LouCity was able to respond only with a dangerous 47th-minute cross that resulted in an own goal by the visitors.

“I think Tampa is a really good team, so full credit to them,” said coach John Hackworth, “but we were the ones that let ourselves down today. We looked great in the first 30 minutes in how we were attacking them, how we were pulling them apart, and how we played through them and that was beautiful.

“Giving up a goal the first time they serve the ball into the box, you can’t do that. It wasn’t that hard; it was just a 1v1 matchup and we got beat on that. You can’t do it in the 45th minute in extra time of the first half either. Two moments that undo us, but I don’t feel like we were unbalanced by Tampa.

“We faced a really good Tampa team and got exactly what we were going to get and thought we were going to get. We had good preparations and we knew what was coming, but credit to Tampa. It’s on us for how this went down.”

Speaking to recent form, this marked the first game in which the boys in purple trailed since July 29 — also their most-recent loss — always scoring first whether they won or drew throughout the unbeaten run.

That resulted in a sixth straight trip to the Eastern Conference Final, putting two-time league champion LouCity a win away from appearing in a fourth straight USL Championship Final.

“We made two mistakes and gave up two goals at really bad times — one early and one right before half,” said midfielder Paolo DelPiccolo, also the team captain. “For me, those are two mistakes you can not make in a game like this. I thought there were spells where we played really good football, too.

“It’s a game we should not lose, and we cannot lose. But when you make mistakes like that, you will lose the game and that’s what happened. It’s tough to swallow.”

In front of 4,900 at Lynn Family Stadium, LouCity was forced to play from behind much of the going Saturday. The club landed a first shot on goal in the 39th minute when forward Corben Bone challenged the opposing goalkeeper from distance. It continued upping the pressure through its substitutions, finishing with just one true defender on the field.

The hosts out-shot Tampa Bay, 13-10, and controlled 68.4% of the possession in the end. It never quite resulted in them putting a ball into the back of the net, on their own at least.

Tampa Bay made this its seventh win in nine games. Like LouCity, the Rowdies exited the regionalized regular season as a No. 1 playoff seed.

The visitors showed just why that was when a Leo Fernandes cross to Zach Steinberger resulted in the game’s opening goal. The Rowdies doubled their advantage when Sebastian Guenzatti scored his 10th goal of the season, creating a lead LouCity couldn’t overcome.

“Wonderful season for us in a lot of ways,” Hackworth said. “It’s awful hard to take it right now, so we’ll need some time to put it in perspective. Such obstacles to overcome with life, with social unrest, with COVID, for this group of guys to work the way that they did — not just hard, but really intelligently, efficiently, and collectively.

“Those guys have been together, literally had to live together, train together and basically shut out the whole outside world since March. It’s tough to do and a testament to how much they care about each other.”
