In celebration on Hispanic Heritage month, Louisville City FC is highlighting local artist Rachel Nuñez.
Nuñez grew up with soccer in her life. Her father, Ernesto, played soccer for Peruvian club Universitario de Deportes, also known as La U.
Born and raised in Louisville, Rachel became drawn to art at young age by drawing characters, along with creating illustrations for her friend’s poems. Currently, she works as a tattoo artist but is also drawn to digital media.
“I love that you can create your own personal narrative with tattoos and digital media,” Nuñez said. “It’s so aesthetically pleasing, and you can have a really good time with just like experimentation with it.”
Ahead of LouCity’s Noche Latina — a 7:30 p.m. Saturday game coinciding with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month — Nuñez designed a special scarf for the team. When tasked with designing this project, she wanted to make something that “encapsulated the Latinx and Hispanic community.”
“It’s carrying traditions, carrying our voices,” she said. “My Peruvian heritage, my Hispanic heritage, has given me a different cultural perspective in life and those experiences have intertwined into my art.”
For Nuñez, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to remember how important it is to keep creating, using your voice and supporting local communities.
“It’s important to never forget how we got here and the sacrifices that have been made for us to pursue things for better,” she said. “That’s what celebrating Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month is about.”
Fans can shop the “Vamos Morados” scarf, designed by Rachel Nuñez, at LouSoccerStore.com. The Lynn Family Stadium team store is also open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
