Kyle Smith cemented himself as one of the league’s best at his position — as well as a fan favorite — when named this week the United Soccer League’s Midseason Defender of the Year.
Smith earned 37 percent of a fan vote among four players entered, following up on his title as 2016 Midseason Rookie of the Year after signed by LouCity out of an open tryout.
The 25-year-old from Cincinnati has played every minute of LouCity’s first 16 home games, totaling a goal and two assists. His 41 chances created rank second on the team.
“Louisville City FC sported the best defensive record in the first half of the season in the Eastern Conference,” the USL wrote, “and while there were numerous reasons for the side’s success, the two-way play brought to the side by Kyle Smith earned the fans’ vote for Midseason Defender of the Year.”
A shutdown defender out of Transylvania University, Smith has more recently figured in LouCity’s attack with the club often pushing outside backs up in a 3-4-3 formation.
His first goal of the year came during the first half of 3-0 win June 11 over defending USL champion New York Red Bulls II. In stoppage time, Smith also recorded an assist.
“He’s someone who, when he first came here, hadn’t played right back,” said coach James O’Connor. “To see him take it the way he has is very pleasing. Really pleased for Kyle that he’s been able to get the nomination.”
