LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A number of words could describe Louisville City FC’s ability to score in 2015.
One makes more sense than many others, though: Easy.
Coach James O’Connor’s team had very little trouble scoring last season, putting a USL-leading 55 goals past league goalkeepers. If the Club’s returning forwards and new signings are any indication, O’Connor shouldn’t have to worry too much about scoring in his team’s second-ever season.
So, who’s back? Well, two guys are expected to contribute quite a bit in 2016.
The first, Ilija Ilic, played in a reserve role last season, but appears ready to challenge for a starting spot. The Serbian scored the final goal of the season at Slugger Field in 2015, and will look to pick up where he and LouCity left off last season. Ilic threatened several times throughout the 2016 preseason, so look for him to take a big step forward in 2016.
The other returning striker, Cameron Lancaster, may technically be a returner, but to most, he’ll feel like a new signing. Lancaster has come a long way since suffering a season-ending knee injury early in the 2015 season, as the former Tottenham Hotspur man is determined to make an impact in his comeback year. O’Connor has eased him back into action, but Lancaster has played in preseason games against the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky and Indy Eleven. Look for LouCity’s No. 9 to play a big role for the Club in 2016.
On top of the returners, O’Connor brought in some new blood during the offseason to build on last season’s attacking successes.
Rookie and trialist-turned-signee, Kenny Doublette, a native of Haiti, won a national championship during his junior year with Southern New Hampshire University and bagged an impressive 15 goals his senior year. Supporters should be excited to see Doublette in the middle of the box, as he is powerful in front of the goal.
Another of O’Connor’s signings is Wake Forest alumnus Andy Lubahn. The former Harrisburg City Islander has impressed throughout the preseason, scoring two goals — including a match-winner against the NASL’s Indy Eleven. Lubahn will likely switch between midfielder and forward, depending on the lineup and shape used in each game. Look for Lubahn to always be in the right place at the right time during LouCity goal-scoring opportunities.
Last but not least is MLS Cup winner Chandler Hoffman. Hoffman has been a focal point of the LouCity attack during preseason, as the former Philadelphia Union, L.A. Galaxy and HoustonDynamo striker has created chances for his team with intelligent runs and whiplash speed. Against Kentucky, Hoffman made a beautiful run and smashed in a goal after a tricky through ball from Mark-Anthony Kaye.
Between Ilic, Lancaster, Doublette, Lubahn and Hoffman, LouCity’s attack should be quite stellar yet again. Coach O’Connor will surely hope they get off to a smashing start against Charlotte on Saturday night.
LouCity then returns to Louisville Slugger Field on April 2 to host New York Red Bulls II in the home opener, with a special 3 p.m. kickoff.
