For the Cup(s), for the Glory!
Raise your cups to Friday! The most recent Friday, in particular, brought about some toast-worthy tidbits of information — especially for LouCity.
The oldest Cup in this great star-spangled soccer-loving land — the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup — announced its 2016 format on USsoccer.com. Simply put, more than 90 teams (a record-high!) will compete — with all USL teams, and your Louisville City FC, entering in the second round of the competition.
But this is what everyone really wants to know:
This year’s winning team will receive $250,000, a berth in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions’ League and have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy, one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports. The runner-up will earn $60,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $15,000 cash prize.
And … LouCity’s newest neighbors now have something to look forward to in their first year. The head-to-head series between FC Cincinnati (booo!) and Louisville City FC (yay!) will see the victor lift the newly minted River Cities Cup. It was voted on by you, the supporters, so check out the full setup HERE.
Aw Snap!
With Louisville City FC’s second-ever season just around the corner, players are making their way from their hometowns to the Derby City. Yesterday, LouCity midfielder Niall McCabe hacked our Snapchat (he’s secretly a computer hacker) and documented his trip from the ATL to the 502.
Niall then lent his hacking skills to new signing Mark-Anthony Kaye, who’s heading to Louisville from the land of maple syrup and Drake.
Now, around the Lou…
The University of Louisville revealed the design of the soon-to-be-renovated Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium yesterday. Steve Jones of the Courier-Journal wrote about it. It’s probably a safe bet that LouCity’s very own Cardinal, Paolo DelPiccolo, will be occupying one of those freshened-up seats.
Earlier today, the University of Kentucky revealed new football and men’s basketball uniforms, along with a new Wildcat logo. Wonder what our UK alumnus George Davis IV thinks of the new blue and white threads?
